Amazing lawyer

I highly recommend John. He is calm and reassuring during a time of caos and uncertainty. I was going through a battle with my ex wife and facing multiple serious charges in multiple counties. I was scared because I thought even though they are false accusations there’s no way they will believe me over her she’s a great actor. John reassured me constantly throughout the 2 year court battle and got my charges in one county dismissed and won in trial on the other charges. He is very technical and has a great presence in the court room. As well as being very well respected by all of his peers. The prosecutors and judges all showed immense respect towards him whenever we met them in the courtroom. I highly recommend John as an attorney. I graduated from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1987. After moving to Portland in 1990 I graduated from the Northwestern School of Law at Lewis & Clark College in 1993.

During law school I was a certified law student at the Metropolitan Public Defenders office and gained my first courtroom experiences, including jury trials. After graduation, I opened up my practice, and through association with and referrals from other attorneys my practice began to thrive.

In December 1995 I was hired by a firm in St. Helens, Oregon representing individuals charged with crimes by the government and tried many cases. After a brief stint with a firm in Beaverton, I was hired by the Columbia County District Attorney’s office in April 1997.

Over my 8+ years as a deputy district attorney I tried cases ranging from DUII all the way to capital murder. I tried over 100 felony trials murder, including capital murder, attempted murder, solicitation to commit murder, and many sexual assault, burglary, felony assault, firearm, meth lab, theft, and stolen vehicles. I worked as a deputy prosecuting attorney in 2005-2006 in Cowlitz County Washington for the last year specializing in sexual and violent crimes. I have also written appeals in both states.

I am specializing in criminal defense in Oregon and Washington. I can handle all levels of offenses as well as appeals and post conviction relief.

I handle expungements of convictions or having convictions set aside.

I am a former prosecutor in Oregon and Washington. Prior to being a prosecutor, I was in private practice and over 13 years of practice I have tried over 100 cases, ranging from misdemeanors, including domestic violence and DUII all the way to capital murder. I was in charge of drug prosecutions and sex offense prosecution in Columbia County. In Cowlitz County, Washington, I handled felony property and person crimes. I also have appellate experience in both states and am also admitted to the federal district of Oregon.

In the two years since going into private practice I have obtained acquittals in Attempted Murder, Assault on a Public Safety Officer, and Assault cases. I have obtained dismissals after successfully having evidence suppressed in drug cases. I have pressured the state to dismiss in other domestic violence cases and assault cases. Furthermore, I have successfully negotiated complex cases to ensure a just result for my clients.

My office is located in prestigious Lake Oswego and I am admitted to practice in the states of Oregon, Washington and New York as well as the federal District for Oregon.

Life Changer

John represented me in a case where i was falsely accused. John let me know every move he made to ease my mind. He stood up for me and what was right. It was great to know someone had my back during stressful times. Best lawyer ever.

John Gutbezahl review

I had a domestic violence case with my ex girlfriend and she was falsely accusing me of many thing. Mr.Gutbezahl caught her in many lies and won us the case. I had another attorney before him who I could tell wasn’t too sure about his skills as an attorney and I did not have a good experience with him then when I hired Mr.Gutbezahl it was a completely different experience he really knows what needs to be done and he does everything he can to make the process as stress free as possible. Mr.Gutbezahl isn’t an attorney who just wants your money he really cares for his job and his clients and I had the best experience I possibly could have had with an attorney I have absolutely 0 complaints about him and I would recommend him to anyone who was in a similar situation as I was! There’s not enough I could say to show my gratitude for Mr.Gutbezahl for everything he did in my case and I’m so grateful for having such a great attorney.

Multiple Measure 11 Charges Dismissed

I was falsely accused of multiple domestic abuse & sex crimes by an ex partner during a messy breakup. These charges carried a possible sentence of 50+ years of jail. All charges were dismissed after 2 years with Mr. Gutbezahl's guidance. John is extremely well liked & well respected within the Oregon Courts. Other Lawyers and Judges within Oregon highly respect Mr. Gutbezahl as he exudes professionalism and politeness all while being non-relenting in his defense. Mr. Gutbezahl made a significant improvement in the quality of my life & that of my family during this process, helping reduce restrictions and even making it possible for us to move out of Oregon. 10/10 would highly recommend!

Someone I can trust with my life!

John came into our lives at a scary time: my brother was facing charges that could carry a life sentence. Our family was sorting through high emotions, countless questions and lots of uncertainty. John is gracious, culturally responsive, patient and has never EVER judged us or the situation. He spent time answering questions and even came into our home (to help foster a space where we could feel safe and at ease) and sat with us to breakdown all the possibilities and his plans. He never made any promises and helped to keep our expectations realistic. He is a thoughtful, brilliant mind that offered us a sense of calm during a trying time. Excellent Attorney

From my initial consultation John was very professional and sincere. He responded to my emails or phone calls in a timely manner whenever I had questions or concerns about my case. Worth it.

I'm glad it's over and we can just be friends!

John helped me put a 25 year conviction away for good so now I can get on with my life. Until one has had my particular life experience, they will never understand how the past comes back to haunt. Very Professional Lawyer

Mr. Gutbezahl did a very professional job representing me. He was a pleasure to work with. I feel that he went above and beyond for me. John puts 1000% into all his clients, his communication skills are top notch! If there is any questions you have he will give you a uncut raw answer and tell you what it is. I was being charged with distribution and possession of heroin...after john and I discussed the situation on how it all happened, john tells me with so much confident that this is definitely worth fighting for. My loved one, a 31-year-old black man was charged with Murder in Multnomah County. Statistically speaking, before we ever looked into hiring defense, it seemed the odds were stacked against him and our outlook on what was to come was grim to say the least. My experience with john

I was thoroughly happy with Johns services as my criminal defense attorney. With his direction and help I was able to get my case dismissed in court, using a very well written and detailed motion to supress evidence. He was cool and calm under pressure, and was very optimistic during the months leading up to trial while remaining honest and telling it to me straight the possible outcome. He stayed in good contact with me and sent me copies of every document created and sent back and forth between him and the court so I never felt uninformed or in the dark about anything on my case whatsoever. When the day of trial came around, he was aggressive in his arguments for my case and his strategy was well organized and delivered on point. The Best Lawyer You Could Ask For

John went well above any expectations I had in helping me and my case. I had given up hope after a terrible experience with the public defender assigned. Fortunately, some family members offered to help me hire a lawyer, and they found John Gutbezahl. I’m so glad they did. When I went with my family to consult with him at his office, we were all shaken up, as we had never experienced the criminal justice system before. John listened patiently to all of us, addressed all of our questions thoroughly. He told us about our options, and the possible outcomes. After we hired him on to help with my case, John went to work right away, doing absolutely everything he could do, to try to get the best outcome. Review for the best criminal defense attorney in the state of Oregon

Initially I went to John for a consultation for a false charge against me for assault. John was very professional and explained to me the process in great length and made me feel extremely comfortable. I immediately made the decision to hire John and it was the best decision I have made. My trial was over a year later and he kept me in the loop at all times. He went above and beyond for me. He hired a private investigator and when it came time for the trial he was completely prepared. At the trial he made me feel comfortable and explained each and every step. Superb legal counsel

A few years ago I was fortunate enough to have mr. gutbezahl defend me on a very complex and difficult criminal case. The state was alleging that I had committed some very serious crimes and was trying to incarcerate me for a substantial amount of time. John worked skillfully and tirelessly to ensure that the truth came out and I was absolved of the alleged crimes. John fought for me and in the end I was treated very fairly by the court. I have since been able to use this second chance to volunteer my time helping other people who have been entangled in the legal system because of their addiction problems. The positive ripple effect that started by Mr Gutbezahl helping me is huge. I have another chance at being a positive, contributing, pro social member of society and because of that I'm helping others learn to be the same.

Knowledgeable, Professional, and Personal: John E. Gutbezahl

Recently, a series of events led to criminal charges for me which made me feel like my life was over. Having never been involved in the criminal justice system, I was completely lost and panicked throughout this process, however having John as my attorney made things much more bearable. I made several calls to other law offices before I came across John Gutbezahl. Most of the other attorneys I spoke with came off very intimidating and almost judgemental in my conversations. John takes a much different approach. From our initial phone consultation, I felt less intimidated by the whole situation. Though our relationship was very professional from a client standpoint, one thing that truly stood out was his ability to level with me as a person putting my anxiety at ease.
