Shawn Lee Murphy

Shawn Murphy is a family law attorney and limits her practice solely to family law matters. She is a Cerfied Family Law Specialist, certified by The State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization.  Ms. Murphy has extensive experience working with individuals in crisis and helping clients effectively negotiate the psychological and emotional aspects inherent in family law issues.  Ms. Murphy is experienced with interstate and international custody and support issues, and has litigated multiple custody disputes under the UCCJEA.  Ms. Murphy is a skilled litigation and trial attorney having completed multiple trials, covering such issues as international move-aways, international abduction matters, child and spousal support, and domestic violence. Ms. Murphy has a successfully argued cases and motions before the Superior Courts of Butte, Placer, Nevada, El Dorado, Sacramento, Lassen, Plumas, Yolo, and Alameda counties in California. She has also successfully argued before the Court of Appeal, Third Appellate District of the State of California.

Ms. Murphy was born and raised in Oregon. In the late 1990’s she moved to Chico, California to attend California State University, Chico, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, and later, a Master of Arts in Political Science, with highest distinction. Ms. Murphy earned her Juris Doctor with Distinction from the University Pacific of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law. After entering law school with honors, she earned distinction as a member of Phi Delta Phi, legal honor society, the Traynor Society for academic excellence, and as the Chief Article Editor of Vol. 46 of the McGeorge Law Review. Her comment, The Supreme Court's Revitalization of the Dying "Existing Indian Family" Exception, was selected for publication in the journal.

Ms. Murphy is active in her community and volunteers her time with numerous social welfare organizations. Some of her activities include volunteering with the Chico Food Project, whose mission is to help supply local food banks, as well as with Catalyst, which provides services to survivors of domestic violence. She also occasionally volunteers with the One Day Divorce program at William Ridgeway Family Court, a program that helps low income participants obtain divorce judgments in one day. She is a member of the California State Bar, serves on the Placer Family Law Executive Committee (PFLEC) of the Placer County Bar Association, is a member of the Sacramento Bar Association- Family Law Section, and the Butte County Bar Association.
