Martin McHugh and his office were very knowledgeable, courteous and professional. I felt very confident and comfortable being represented by Mr. McHugh and was extremely satisfied with my choice to retain him. I have recommended him to others, and will continue to do so. Overall he made a terrible situation so much easier and I am very grateful for his help.
very blessed to have had Martin McHugh working my case
I was referred to Martin McHugh by a criminal attorney that only wanted the best outcome for me and my one year old baby. Our case was sensitive, involving restraining orders and our personal safety. From the first meeting with Martin it was obvious that he had a passion for practicing law and did not "need my case just to pay his mortgage". Martin was attentive when listening to my situation, he was realistic in explaining the process of custody battles and how "opposing attorneys can draw them out for months to wear the other party down so that they settle". Martin surgically dissected each article of the opposing parties paperwork, responding quickly and effectively. He never buckled to a settlement, and quite the contrary advocated for the continual best interest of our very young child. Martin and his team were prompt with the billing process, providing monthly statements of exactly were I stood on funds in my retainer account. He and his office were efficient with their time balancing a quality job well done without wasting any of my money.
Because of Martins passion for well representing his clients, his effectiveness in the court room both in cross examination on trial and speaking for the best interest of his clients and their children in open court to the Judge, and his high level of personal integrity, I would without hesitation recommend Martin McHugh.

Chico's Best Lawyer
I hired Mr. McHugh in November of 2017 and it was the best decision I made for my child custody case. My custody case is a nightmare. Through Mr. McHugh and my own hard work, we slowly but surely have gained ground. Mr. McHugh is honest and up-front about how to handle the twist and turns of family law cases. From what I have gathered over the year, Mr. McHugh is well respected by fellow lawyers and more importantly by judges.

Dave with neighbor dispute
Very blessed to have had Mr. McHugh deal with my case. He took the concerns we had with our families to heart and didn't let the other lawyer twist things around. He did his homework with what evidence we had. He stood by myside and the other people that were involved also and we got what we got our restraining orders. With his help everything went smoothly and expeditiously as it could. We appreciate him and his firm and would recommend him to anyone that needs a good attorney. He is very trustworthy and knowledgeable.
Thank you
David

Trustworthy and Knowledgeable
I have worked in the legal field in Butte and Glenn Counties for more than 8 years. I had the pleasure of working for Mr. McHugh as his legal secretary for more than three years and he also represented me though a very difficult personal family law matter. I highly recommend Mr. McHugh for legal advice and representation in Family Law matters as well as Criminal, Probate, Personal Injury and Civil Matters. His proven reputation for being professional, ethical, and an intelligent confident litigator, is recognized and well respected by the Butte County Court, Judges and fellow attorneys. From initial consultations to court dates, Mr McHugh and staff go above and beyond to keep clients well informed, they are always professional, positive, supportive and well prepared for the multiple complex and difficult court hearings and trial. Mr. McHugh's attention to detail and knowledge is outstanding, he provides solid legal arguments with positive results and his fees are extremely fair for the amount of hours and work he and his staff provide. I feel fortunate and thankful to have had Mr. McHugh not only as a boss and mentor but also represent me legally through a very complex, difficult, and challenging case, that resulted in positive resolution and closure.

Martin was very informative and responsive to me. He kept me informed every step of the way. Most important was his follow through. Prompt and thorough. I strongly recommend Martin McHugh. If the need arises I will hire Martin without haste.

Not Helpful. Not Engaged. Unresponsive.
Mr. McHugh is a lawyer. Just not a very helpful one.
Please consider the following questions before allowing Mr. McHugh to take your money and represent you:
Would you like a lawyer that:
* Advocates for you?
* Communicates with you?
* Possesses a sense of urgency?
* Instills a sense of reassurance or partnership with you?
* Takes notes regarding your case and then actually refers to them in the future?
* Makes eye contact with you?
* Remembers your name?
If you answer “Yes” to any of the above questions, then Mr. McHugh is not the lawyer for you.
Instead, if you would like a lawyer that:
* Starts off your first consultation by saying: “I don’t mean to insult your intelligence…” and then does exactly that.
* Makes you feel like a simpleton because YOU don’t understand the law or the intricacies of the court.
* Requires continual hand-holding, follow-up, and prompting from you for any action to be taken on your behalf.
* Does not respond in a timely manner to your calls, voicemails, or emails.
* Simply forwards emails to you from the court or the opposing counsel with no explanatory comment or additional context.
* Forces the opposing counsel to write a hardcopy letter to your lawyer that starts with: “I have been trying to reach you. Please give me a call.” Just to get a response and discuss terms.
* When confronted, admits that his communications with you have not been “up to par” and yet is no more proactive or transparent in future interactions.
If you answered “Yes” to any of these questions, then congratulations! Mr. McHugh is your kind of lawyer.
If you retain Mr. McHugh, expect to pay full price for less than full service. You will be left in the dark and then get billed for doing your own case management and communication.
Mr. McHugh failed to put forth even the minimum expected effort for a retained attorney. At no time in handling my case did he proactively reach out to me with information, options, or communications to bring my case to a timely resolution.
In every interaction it was up to me to initiate communication or prompt him to take action in contacting opposing counsel or continually remind him to ensure key elements I desired were included in the iterative drafts of court documents.
The gut-wrenching process of a divorce or custody dispute is draining and comes at a high emotional cost. Paying for an attorney that is distant, disengaged, and unresponsive only compounds the cost.
Had Mr. McHugh expended half the effort on my behalf that I spent on writing this online review, I would have avoided a great deal of unnecessary anxiety, stress, and fees.
Save yourself the trouble, frustration, and headache of my experience. Keep searching and find a helpful and committed lawyer to represent you.
