Estate Planning generally does not involve a "case", just making a plan. It becomes a "case" when not done properly or circumstances change, creating litigation.

estate planning

Elizabeth assisted us with our estate planning and our experience was extremely positive. We found Elizabeth both knowledgeable and professional in all areas of the planning process. She was insightful in her suggestions for our needs and innovative in her ideas for what would be the best plan for ...us. She keeps us posted with tax and law updates that may effect us adversely. We look forward to continuing to receive her advice for many years in the future.

Poor communication skills

I was referred to miss Johnson through a community organization for a tax issue. She asked me to fill out a POA form and mail it to her. 4 days later I followed up with her, at which time she claimed to never have received it. In the interim she asked for me to resend the form and for a letter expla...ining my situation. I emailed her a thorough synopsis of what my situation was, including the tax years in question and also related a conversation I had with the tax board as to why the action was being taken. I also sent her a copy of the letter from FTB outlining the amount they were collecting. What followed were emails from her asking specific questions about why this action was happening, which tax years were we dealing with, what amount was being collected, and other things that were clearly stated in my first letter to her. She asked me to "describe my situation " so that she would know what to do for me. Her entreaty for me to describe my situation included no specifics. I wrote back that it was a vague question, and also it seemed from my perspective that she had not read my replies. She asked specific questions about my health. In my replies I pointed out where I had already answered the questions she repeated and also wrote that I didn't see how my health was relevant to the situation. To her credit she did explain what her motives were for inquiring about my health and in the same letter claimed I "was obviously annoyed and I should ask for another referral as we had had a communication breakdown. In my opinion the communication broke down when she repeatedly asked me for information that had already been provided in writing.(tax years in question, amount being collected, an specifics about the bank account in question). In some cases twice. When I answered theses repeated questions one by one pointing out when and where they had been answered and suggested that to me it seemed as if she weren't reading my replies, she recommended I should find so someone else to help me. I should point out that miss Johnson was doing this as a volunteer for the organization which referred me, it felt to me( especially because of the repeated questions and her vague request to describe my situation mentioned earlier) that she was not really interested in helping me. As a disabled person who has had to deal with many different agencies, it has been my experience that do-gooders who volunteer their time and effort are sometimes doing it not to really help humanity, but to assuage their own guilt. Also, it seems to me that because of all the repetition, that she was not really giving my issue very close attention. I'm certain she does better for her paying clients.

This client was not forthcoming with all the facts to me but seems comfortable disclosing his own private facts in a public forum and using it to attack me so I reluctantly respond to defend myself against this libel. The information I received from the referring agency was not what he provided to me. The facts as I was lead to believe they were required a different path than the tunnel vision approach of this person, going along only the limited path he was willing to discuss, and was inappropriate. I have helped this anonymous agency over 20 years, helping diligently one client in particular over 3 years, pro bono, because he needed my help and I could give it. It has nothing to do with 'guilt' or to assuage anything. That is demeaning to all the people who volunteer their time to help those in need. I do this because I can. This writer is a symptom of a new entitlement mentality that I am sad to see. "Give me", "do for me", "if you don't jump as high as I demand, I will write you a petty bad review in a public forum", going out of his way to cause me whatever self-perceived harm he could. It is egocentric and childish. It is 'the World owes me because I am sick or disabled....', or whatever, thinking. At the very, very initial stages of fact gathering, having given him several chances to fully disclose the situation a form letter could not, he had a hissy fit. There is no reason I need to continue to work for any client, paying or not, when there is such rudeness or a break down in communication. His unrealistic expectation of entitlement is offensive and really takes away from the very many people who need help and because of people like him, or the drama queens of the World, there will be fewer volunteers there to help. In my many years of working, I have been able to work as a team with various clients to resolve issues that could have had devastating consequences to their daily lives. Most of the many people I have worked with by this type of referral over the many years I have done the work have been honest, decent and delightful people to work with. It would, I suppose, be too much to expect them all to be. I was just unfortunate enough to find a person on the other side of that spectrum who also turns out to be vindictive. And he spews forth his anger at life, his entitlement thinking and his pettiness here. Sad thing to see.

Avvo Rating

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
