You have to trust your lawyer as much as your doctor. This comes from meeting a person face to face, asking questions, and getting a feel for skill, caring and trustworthiness. Second opinions should always be an option. A criminal defense lawyer, like a surgeon, should "feel the pain" of the person and family, while still exercising skill and judgment that stands apart. Your lawyer should care about you. I also believe in being completely candid with clients about the best and worst possible outcomes.
In law, like medicine, one must start with an accurate diagnosis of the problem, and apply the best techniques that suit that situation. The techniques are the lawyer's "toolbox". That is where experience comes in. One size does not fit all. Before you pick your lawyer, you should get the feeling that he knows how to deal with the legal problems, and cares about the outcome for the real people involved. Call me.
