Jeffrey D. Montez’s commitment to serve has been a constant throughout his life. He was born in Los Angeles and raised in the diverse neighborhood of Sherman Oaks.
From there he went on to Yale – a perfect match for Montez – because the commitment to serve the world is etched in the gargoyle-trimmed facades of the gothic New Haven university campus. Jeff called numerous sporting events on Yale radio and wrote about others.
His first career was in journalism, covering sports for a daily newspaper in metropolitan New York City. One evening after shoveling his car after a soggy snowstorm, Montez decided to return West.
The Southern California native always wanted to combine his love of sports with his interests in helping people, research, public speaking and writing.
At Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, he met Kristen, a leading San Diego attorney in the areas of medical tourism, healthcare, and life sciences. They moved to San Diego in 2008; it was one of the best decisions of their lives. His most important job is to help raise their son, currently a bounding and goofy preschooler.
Jeff’s ultimate thrill is being at a sporting event — the excitement and anticipation of live competition. His earliest memory is from the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles (the XXIIIrd Olympiad). Jeff grew up spending his winter vacations from school seeing his breath in the morning chill outside the Rose Bowl. He has been lucky enough to attend seven Super Bowls; three PGA Championships; two Rose Bowl Games; the U.S. Open; a Ryder Cup; an MLB All-Star Game; a World Series; playoff games in MLB, NHL, NBA and NFL; the Summer Olympic Games; the Kentucky Derby; and countless other games and matches.
Jeff is actively involved in the San Diego community. He is a past board member of the Pacific Beach Town Council and Yale Club of San Diego, and currently serves on the boards of several groups including the American Constitution Society for Law and Policy, and the San Diego Latino-Jewish Coalition.
