I knew from the beginning of my legal career that my passion and talent were in legal research and writing, which led me quite naturally into my appellate practice.
For over 30 years I have successfully prosecuted and defended appeals in all of the California Courts of Appeal, including the California Supreme Court, as well as in the Ninth Circuit Federal Court of Appeal and the U.S. Supreme Court. I love the creative challenge of distilling complex legal situations into clear and concise written "stories" and the intellectual challenge of finding, analyzing and presenting the legal precedents which help my clients achieve their goals, whether they are reversal of a bad decision, affirmance of a good one, or the chance for a “do-over” when the original proceeding was unfair or flawed.
I also offer consulting and motion-drafting services to attorneys.
I enjoy a one-to-one relationship with my clients. I personally do all the research and writing for each case and when my clients have questions, I am the person they talk to.
I keep my rates very low compared to other attorneys with my experience because most of my clients are average working people and I understand that by the time someone gets to the appeal level, they have likely already been through several years of costly litigation.
Because my practice entails mostly research and writing and does not require me to be in court very much, I easily handle cases from all over California.
I look forward to talking with you about your matter. Please call me for a free consultation!

Review of Janice Mazur appeals attorney
My name is Albert Balascio. Janice Mazur represented my wife and I in an appeal after an insurance company received a $94,000 judgement from a wrongful death suite involving our daughter Stacey's death in case we lost on the first go around. You see our daughter was killed by an illegally parked ...

We are using Janice Mazur for the 2nd time now
While we were unable to prevail, we found Janice to be a very good appeals attorney. Her fees are reasonable, and in our last case she sent us a refund of the unused portion of fees without a request. We are currently using her again in another appeals matter that is pending at this time.

I do not recommend
There was important evidence missing from her documents that could have jeopardized my case. Fortunately the appeal judges did not miss anything and they affirmed. Working from a different state is not always helpful.
Although this client had never been involved in an appeal before, he demanded that I present his case in a way that was not helpful to his position, despite many communications in which I explained to him how the appellate process works and how the appellate judges would review his case. I presented all the necessary evidence to the court and ultimately, the court decided in my client’s favor on exactly the grounds and for the reasons I predicted it would. Despite the fact that I won his case, the client accused me of “conspiring” against him with his opponent, a contention which was not only false, it was completely illogical. After I won the case, the matter was sent back to the trial court where my client was potentially entitled to recover attorneys’ fees from his losing opponent. Because he had been abusive to me, I declined to represent him in these subsequent proceedings which were not within the scope of our Retainer Agreement. However, consistent with my ethical responsibilities, I did provide him with detailed information about what he had to submit and what his deadlines were. He hired another lawyer who blew the deadline to file the necessary papers. After that, despite having accused me of being unethical and dishonest, he begged me to represent him again against the new lawyer. I declined, and as a result, he has provided this negative review. Working out of state has no bearing on appellate practice, which involves electronic filings of documents and no evidentiary hearings.

Charged over $300.00 per page for an appeal which was very straight forward.
I hired her since she said she was an appeal specialist. She charged me almost $10,000 for an opening brief. I had another attoney represinting me. She refused to give a breakdown of how long she spent on each issue. She dragged it out for almost 3 months. She did not advise me she was going on vacat...
