When I began my legal career, special education law was not even on my radar. In fact, I didn’t know it existed. My focus was criminal defense, particularly juvenile defense, for nearly a decade. Looking back, I now realize how many of the children I represented had undiagnosed disabilities. They were misunderstood, blamed, and punished for behaviors rooted not in malice or misconduct, but in disability. Then life took an unexpected turn, one that would transform not only my personal journey but the entire trajectory of my career.

At just six weeks old, my son Brandon was diagnosed with Focal Cortical Dysplasia, a congenital brain malformation that causes catastrophic seizures known as Infantile Spasms. The impact on his development was immediate and severe, threatening both his physical and intellectual growth. In those early days, I was consumed with fear and uncertainty, grieving the loss of the child I had envisioned. But after the grief came resolve. I began to recalibrate everything, my priorities, my path, and my purpose, determined to meet every one of my son’s needs.

Like many parents of children with disabilities, I spent countless sleepless nights searching for answers, staring at the ceiling at 2:00 a.m., determined to find a way forward. I immersed myself in neuroscience, special education law, and every resource I could find to help my son reach his fullest potential. I fought, and won, against the school district to secure his rightful inclusion. That experience ignited something in me. I realized that the tools, strategies, and relentless advocacy I had cultivated could be used to help others. My career began to shift, fueled by passion and a personal understanding that this work was no longer just a legal practice, it was my mission.

As I journeyed alongside my son, I met countless parents desperate for guidance, overwhelmed by a complex and opaque system. Many were unaware of their rights. Most were given incomplete or misleading information. Far too often, school districts make decisions based not on a child’s best interest, but on cost-efficiency. Services are rationed, options are withheld, and legal mandates are ignored. And so many parents, out of fear, confusion, or exhaustion, accept it.

I couldn’t. I wouldn’t. And I didn’t.

The injustice of it all, the misinformation, the denial of services, the quiet erosion of potential, compelled me to act. I officially launched my own special education law practice in 2009. While I had been advocating for Brandon long before that, I knew it was time to extend that advocacy to other families walking a similar path. I had lived their fear. I had felt their frustration. And I knew I could help.

There is no greater force than a parent’s love for their child. It is what fuels our fight, even when the odds feel insurmountable. Yet, no parent should have to fight alone, especially not when the stakes are so high and the system so resistant. The truth is, with the right tools, support, and advocacy, children with disabilities can receive an education that prepares them for a meaningful, independent life. But getting there takes work, and it takes the right guidance.

Allow me to share with you the knowledge I have gained on this long, painful, beautiful, and life-altering journey. Here are a few key lessons I offer to every parent stepping into the world of special education:

First and foremost, BELIEVE IN YOUR CHILD. Regardless of diagnosis, challenge, or label, never set the bar low. If you begin with limited expectations, so will everyone else. But if you lead with hope, conviction, and a belief in your child’s potential, others will begin to see it too. Doctors, therapists, and school officials may try to define your child’s limits. Do not let them. Your mindset must be one of unwavering optimism. Set the bar high and keep it there.

Remember, it is up to you to make sure the administrators, mediators, and judges see your child, not just their diagnosis. When the district tells you, “We do not offer that,” do not believe it. The law does not hinge on convenience. If a service is necessary to meet your child’s unique needs, the district must provide it. Your resolve is your greatest weapon. Your belief is your greatest strength.

I often say there is no greater inequality than the equal treatment of unequals. Children with disabilities deserve tailored support, not blanket solutions. They deserve advocates who will not rest until the system sees their worth and delivers on its promise.

That is where I come in. That is why I do this work. And that is why I will continue to stand beside every parent who, like me, refuses to give up.
