When I began my legal career, special education law was not even on my radar. In fact, I didn’t know it existed. My focus was criminal defense, particularly juvenile defense, for nearly a decade. Looking back, I now realize how many of the children I represented had undiagnosed disabilities. They were misunderstood, blamed, and punished for behaviors rooted not in malice or misconduct, but in disability. Then life took an unexpected turn, one that would transform not only my personal journey but the entire trajectory of my career.
At just six weeks old, my son Brandon was diagnosed with Focal Cortical Dysplasia, a congenital brain malformation that causes catastrophic seizures known as Infantile Spasms. The impact on his development was immediate and severe, threatening both his physical and intellectual growth. In those early days, I was consumed with fear and uncertainty, grieving the loss of the child I had envisioned. But after the grief came resolve. I began to recalibrate everything, my priorities, my path, and my purpose, determined to meet every one of my son’s needs.
Like many parents of children with disabilities, I spent countless sleepless nights searching for answers, staring at the ceiling at 2:00 a.m., determined to find a way forward. I immersed myself in neuroscience, special education law, and every resource I could find to help my son reach his fullest potential. I fought, and won, against the school district to secure his rightful inclusion. That experience ignited something in me. I realized that the tools, strategies, and relentless advocacy I had cultivated could be used to help others. My career began to shift, fueled by passion and a personal understanding that this work was no longer just a legal practice, it was my mission.
As I journeyed alongside my son, I met countless parents desperate for guidance, overwhelmed by a complex and opaque system. Many were unaware of their rights. Most were given incomplete or misleading information. Far too often, school districts make decisions based not on a child’s best interest, but on cost-efficiency. Services are rationed, options are withheld, and legal mandates are ignored. And so many parents, out of fear, confusion, or exhaustion, accept it.
I couldn’t. I wouldn’t. And I didn’t.
The injustice of it all, the misinformation, the denial of services, the quiet erosion of potential, compelled me to act. I officially launched my own special education law practice in 2009. While I had been advocating for Brandon long before that, I knew it was time to extend that advocacy to other families walking a similar path. I had lived their fear. I had felt their frustration. And I knew I could help.
There is no greater force than a parent’s love for their child. It is what fuels our fight, even when the odds feel insurmountable. Yet, no parent should have to fight alone, especially not when the stakes are so high and the system so resistant. The truth is, with the right tools, support, and advocacy, children with disabilities can receive an education that prepares them for a meaningful, independent life. But getting there takes work, and it takes the right guidance.
Allow me to share with you the knowledge I have gained on this long, painful, beautiful, and life-altering journey. Here are a few key lessons I offer to every parent stepping into the world of special education:
First and foremost, BELIEVE IN YOUR CHILD. Regardless of diagnosis, challenge, or label, never set the bar low. If you begin with limited expectations, so will everyone else. But if you lead with hope, conviction, and a belief in your child’s potential, others will begin to see it too. Doctors, therapists, and school officials may try to define your child’s limits. Do not let them. Your mindset must be one of unwavering optimism. Set the bar high and keep it there.
Remember, it is up to you to make sure the administrators, mediators, and judges see your child, not just their diagnosis. When the district tells you, “We do not offer that,” do not believe it. The law does not hinge on convenience. If a service is necessary to meet your child’s unique needs, the district must provide it. Your resolve is your greatest weapon. Your belief is your greatest strength.
I often say there is no greater inequality than the equal treatment of unequals. Children with disabilities deserve tailored support, not blanket solutions. They deserve advocates who will not rest until the system sees their worth and delivers on its promise.
That is where I come in. That is why I do this work. And that is why I will continue to stand beside every parent who, like me, refuses to give up.

A fierce, knowledgeable, compassionate advocate for children with special needs.
Georgianna Junco-Kelman has been a wonderful advocate for my sons and the reason my children have received the correct resources from LAUSD. I first consulted with Georgianna prior to my son’s first IEP. I just wanted some tips from her on how to best advocate for him during the IEP. I was not my ...

Disappointed
I have to say I agree 100% with the other negative reviews. The previous reviews described our experience to a T! She was late to every single meeting and it was near impossible to get a hold of her. She is very sweet but very very busy. I felt like she shouldn't have taken on our case if she didn't ...
Respectfully, I completely disagree with your review and deem it unfair and highly inaccurate. You reference "other negative reviews" as if those are in the majority here when in 9 years of my special ed practice there have been 2 negative reviews posted; the first, I believe is a false review as per my response on it since the accusations are too far-fetched and the antithesis of who I am and how I conduct myself in my advocacy and practice and, the second, I clearly expressed on my response comment was a client with unreasonable expectations and inaccurate account of the facts. I noticed you glossed over the other 24 very positive and complimentary reviews, in which I take great pride. Yes, I am busy and that is due to the number of clients that retain me for whom I obtain successful results and hence why they continue to recommend me; thus my very busy and burgeoning practice, and why I was honored by a prestigious international non-profit for the work I do this past March. I am not bragging, simply pointing out that I give my kiddo clients my all and I am prideful in the recognition and accolades I receive as a result. But, while I may not have been able to readily return your phone calls upon your request (as often I am in proceedings for a long period of time such as your almost 3 hour IEP meeting), my efficient and professional assistant, Isabel, returned all calls immediately and scheduled timely phone conferences for us to speak soon thereafter, as it is our custom. We had two meetings, one of which I was 10 minutes late to because school officials had me wait in a different building for you rather than where you were waiting for me for the meeting; which I explained to you and to the team upon my arrival. I absolutely knew the specifics of the case and we discussed them at length, as I do with every case in the pre-IEP meeting conference call. Lastly, not obtaining "what you were going for" does not mean I did not thoroughly do my job. I explained that in my professional and expert opinion that which you wished the District to provide was not reasonable and not warranted by the evidence and I advised that filing a due process complaint in pursuit of your demands would have been meritless at that juncture since we did not have the facts to contest that which the District offered. What would be my incentive in not continuing to represent you if I believed you had a viable claim? My job is not to sugarcoat, or to frivolously charge clients for cases not yet ripe for due process - but to ensure all avenues are explored within the bounds of what the law permits in order to obtain that which will benefit your child to the maximum extent possible. I am confident I did that. Simply because you "wanted more" does not deem me incompetent. I advised you accordingly. Although you signed your comment anonymous, I am able to pin point who you are because negative feedback or reviews from clients are few and far between and almost non-existent in my practice as illustrated by the myriad of stellar reviews on this website and the two to three referrals I receive weekly, including the two additional complimentary reviews having been added since yours - and I take tremendous pride in that. I wish you the absolute very best for your little one always and I am regretful that you did not call me directly to address your concerns after our last discussion. My door remains open. My very best, GJK.

Amazing lawyer and advocate
Georgianna Junco-Kelman has been an amazing advocate for my son. For years I felt like I was the only one noticing that my son was not adequately learning in the classroom. Via a referral, I called Mrs. Kelman. After my first conversation with her I knew she was the right advocate for me and my son. ...

I agree with the below post
I agree with the post below. If you need to communicate with Mrs. Kelman it will not happen. I had the same lack of communication problems. To further that I had actually wanted to speak to her prior to my meeting with the school. She showed up a half hour late claiming it was her assistants fault. M...
Respectfully, our office did not represent you at an IEP meeting, hence your accusations are disingenuous and false. Ms. Kelman thoroughly reviews all germane documentation prior to any meeting. Ms. Kelman was not late; she was 15 minutes early at student's school, rather than the District office where the meeting was being held. Our office was regretful of the location misunderstanding for which we apologized, albeit it had no detrimental effect on the outcome of the meeting and mistakes sometimes do occur. Ms. Kelman returned your phone calls within 24 hours in every instance, sometimes sooner, and your emails were responded to upon receipt. Unfortunately, your requirement that Ms. Kelman return your phone calls "immediately" was not a reasonable expectation. Ms. Kelman was able to obtain a very positive result for you, for which you thanked her profusely. However, as a result of a fundamental difference in next best steps to be taken in the best interest of student, our office withdrew our representation and wished you the best of luck in the future.
"Georgianna Junco-Kelman cares deeply about every client as she sees her own parental struggles and that of her son, in each child. She has taught free special education to parents in order to raise awareness and I have personally attended a week-long conference with her wherein I often felt she knew more that the instructor. Georgianna selflessly gives of her time to the Autism Speaks community and wherever she can to raise awareness - this is not just a job for her, it is a cause. I give her my strongest endorsement."
"Mrs. Kelman is devoted to her clients. I have known her for many years and this area of law is certainly her calling. She will not rest until she successfully gets each and every child the right and appropriate educational plan. I would trust her with my own kids."
"Georgianna is a caring and passionate attorney who will not rest until her unfortunate clients get what they deserve. The best lawyer in your corner by far...beware school distrcit...with Georgianna on your team....game over!"
