When I began my legal career, special education law was not even on my radar. In fact, I didn’t know it existed. My focus was criminal defense, particularly juvenile defense, for nearly a decade. Looking back, I now realize how many of the children I represented had undiagnosed disabilities. They were misunderstood, blamed, and punished for behaviors rooted not in malice or misconduct, but in disability. Then life took an unexpected turn, one that would transform not only my personal journey but the entire trajectory of my career.
At just six weeks old, my son Brandon was diagnosed with Focal Cortical Dysplasia, a congenital brain malformation that causes catastrophic seizures known as Infantile Spasms. The impact on his development was immediate and severe, threatening both his physical and intellectual growth. In those early days, I was consumed with fear and uncertainty, grieving the loss of the child I had envisioned. But after the grief came resolve. I began to recalibrate everything, my priorities, my path, and my purpose, determined to meet every one of my son’s needs.
Like many parents of children with disabilities, I spent countless sleepless nights searching for answers, staring at the ceiling at 2:00 a.m., determined to find a way forward. I immersed myself in neuroscience, special education law, and every resource I could find to help my son reach his fullest potential. I fought, and won, against the school district to secure his rightful inclusion. That experience ignited something in me. I realized that the tools, strategies, and relentless advocacy I had cultivated could be used to help others. My career began to shift, fueled by passion and a personal understanding that this work was no longer just a legal practice, it was my mission.
As I journeyed alongside my son, I met countless parents desperate for guidance, overwhelmed by a complex and opaque system. Many were unaware of their rights. Most were given incomplete or misleading information. Far too often, school districts make decisions based not on a child’s best interest, but on cost-efficiency. Services are rationed, options are withheld, and legal mandates are ignored. And so many parents, out of fear, confusion, or exhaustion, accept it.
I couldn’t. I wouldn’t. And I didn’t.
The injustice of it all, the misinformation, the denial of services, the quiet erosion of potential, compelled me to act. I officially launched my own special education law practice in 2009. While I had been advocating for Brandon long before that, I knew it was time to extend that advocacy to other families walking a similar path. I had lived their fear. I had felt their frustration. And I knew I could help.
There is no greater force than a parent’s love for their child. It is what fuels our fight, even when the odds feel insurmountable. Yet, no parent should have to fight alone, especially not when the stakes are so high and the system so resistant. The truth is, with the right tools, support, and advocacy, children with disabilities can receive an education that prepares them for a meaningful, independent life. But getting there takes work, and it takes the right guidance.
Allow me to share with you the knowledge I have gained on this long, painful, beautiful, and life-altering journey. Here are a few key lessons I offer to every parent stepping into the world of special education:
First and foremost, BELIEVE IN YOUR CHILD. Regardless of diagnosis, challenge, or label, never set the bar low. If you begin with limited expectations, so will everyone else. But if you lead with hope, conviction, and a belief in your child’s potential, others will begin to see it too. Doctors, therapists, and school officials may try to define your child’s limits. Do not let them. Your mindset must be one of unwavering optimism. Set the bar high and keep it there.
Remember, it is up to you to make sure the administrators, mediators, and judges see your child, not just their diagnosis. When the district tells you, “We do not offer that,” do not believe it. The law does not hinge on convenience. If a service is necessary to meet your child’s unique needs, the district must provide it. Your resolve is your greatest weapon. Your belief is your greatest strength.
I often say there is no greater inequality than the equal treatment of unequals. Children with disabilities deserve tailored support, not blanket solutions. They deserve advocates who will not rest until the system sees their worth and delivers on its promise.
That is where I come in. That is why I do this work. And that is why I will continue to stand beside every parent who, like me, refuses to give up.

Gives and gets respect for all involved in the IEP
After a frustrating few years we hired Georgianna to help us navigate the IEP process for our 4th grade son. We should've done it sooner. It would have saved us a lot of tears and headaches. Immediately upon hiring Georgianna, she came on board knowing exactly how to proceed. She is tough - someon...

Georgianna is an amazing effective attorney!
After consulting others who gave me no hope, she was ready and willing to take the case against the school district fearlessly. Exceptional listener and communicator who effectively conveys information verbally and in writing via email, even on weekends. I was overjoyed on how a warrior parent who ...

Extremely Disappointed
While Ms. Junco-Kelman is knowledgeable about the IEP process, she is very unresponsive. She was never available to speak or meet with my husband and me and missed every appointment we had scheduled. If you are a client who wants to communicate with your lawyer, she is not for you. During the IEP pro...
This is Georgianna Junco-Kelm responding. While most lawyers would dismiss postings like this, I take such pride in my dealings with my client and my vigorous advocacy at IEP meetings on their behalf, that I feel compelled to respond. This post is the exact antithesis of who I am and how I conduct myself with my clients. I am one of the few lawyers that give her client her cell phone number so that I may be reached at any time. I often cannot return your call right away, as many lawyers cannot, given the volume and nature of our work, but I make myself available via email 24/7 and respond immediately if able or typically always inside of 24 hours - the same with phone calls. I staunchly disagree with this review and urge you to contact me directly and address any issue with me directly, as I believe it is false. I would NEVER reduce accommodations and certainly not try to change them back to what my client was originally dissatisfied with. That is ludicrous. I always go out of my way to reschedule a meeting that I was unable to keep, which is usually due to a conflict in schedule or unforeseen circumstance, whether telephonic or in person. To speak in absolutes like I "was never available," and I "missed every appointment" is a clear indication that they are false statements. I suspect that were it the truth I would have undoubtedly received a few complaints from you! I cannot recall a single one even close to these accusations. If you had a problem of any kind, I wish you had addressed it with me, which you clearly did not, and chose instead to publicly disparage my practice and myself. I unequivocally deny every single allegation made against me by you and I am saddened that we live in an age where one now has the tools and power to disparage another freely, unjustifiably and with impunity, rather than engaging in human decency and having the courtesy to address them directly. Whomever may be reading this at any time and considering retaining my services, I hope factors in that there is always two sides to every story and does not consider searching elsewhere for assistance based on one disgruntled client's false accusations, if this post is indeed real, who took to defaming my reputable name and practice. Simply, these accusations are just not who I am and how I conduct my business. I completely reject them. My door truly IS always open.
"Georgianna Junco-Kelman cares deeply about every client as she sees her own parental struggles and that of her son, in each child. She has taught free special education to parents in order to raise awareness and I have personally attended a week-long conference with her wherein I often felt she knew more that the instructor. Georgianna selflessly gives of her time to the Autism Speaks community and wherever she can to raise awareness - this is not just a job for her, it is a cause. I give her my strongest endorsement."
"Mrs. Kelman is devoted to her clients. I have known her for many years and this area of law is certainly her calling. She will not rest until she successfully gets each and every child the right and appropriate educational plan. I would trust her with my own kids."
"Georgianna is a caring and passionate attorney who will not rest until her unfortunate clients get what they deserve. The best lawyer in your corner by far...beware school distrcit...with Georgianna on your team....game over!"
