About a year ago I hired David Weil for a relatively small case and paid a $3,000 retainer. After wiring the funds, he did no work that I'm aware of, and he stopped responding to phone, email, and certified mail. I filed a complaint with the State Bar, but that investigation is not yet resolved.
This client's retainer was refunded in full with no action taken by the State Bar.

This attorney was hired to handle a yacht sale/purchase transaction between two private parties. He appeared responsive and knowledgable prior to us engaging his services. Once the retainer was paid and the sale/purchase transaction was ready to proceed, he was difficult to reach and went days with...
We unfortunately had a communication problem with this client, which has since been resolved.

"I have worked on numerous matters over the last 4 years with Dave. He has precise legal arguments and a beautiful writing style that gets the court's attention - in a good way. He knows his way around the laws and the courtroom. Clients are lucky to have his expertise."
"I have known David for many years both as a Yachtsmen and a Lawyer. David excels as both. As a lawyer David‘s firm is the only place that I would trust to send a client to that involves any type of Maritime issue. I personally hired David to handle a dispute with my insurance company involving a Maritime claim and his years of experience and relationships with leading experts guided both parties to a cost effective solution."
"I endorse this lawyer's work. We worked together on a large project in which he arrested and sold a multimillion dollar yacht. He is an adjunct professor at local law schools and so not only knows the law, but how to use the law to get things done. He is tenacious, hard-working and extremely insightful."

The determination of what law to apply depends upon weighing the seven Lauritzen factors. Those factors point to the application of U.S. law, and U.S. law provides a maritime lien so that the arrest was lawful.
