In my opinion, Mr. Alex Cohen is the most unprofessional and unethical lawyer I have ever encountered who on numerous occasions crossed professional and ethical boundaries in handling of my home insurance claim. First and absolutely worst of all, an attorney did not represent my case. Instead it w...as assigned to a "case manager/a law student" without my consent and this law student communicated to the insurance on my behalf. None (absolutely zero) of the communications this firm sent on my behalf to the insurance was actually signed by the attorney I hired yet they charged me the exorbitant fees of an attorney without providing me attorney services! I find this to be unethical and unprofessional. The whole point of hiring an attorney is to escalate the matter to someone of more expertise who has legal power to influence the insurance but I did not get that from this firm. Not a single communication was sent on my behalf to the insurance from an attorney. Next he wrote a retainer that protected himself without honoring my pre-retainer wishes. For example I told them before I retained them that I want to be informed of any expense over a certain threshold, but they completely ignored this request and at the end of the case then deducted numerous expenses from MY portion of recovery which I had not approved. When I asked why I wasn't informed of these expenses that were over my desired threshold, I was told that even though this request was made in writing via email prior to our contract, it wasn't in the retainer so he did not have to honor it! Then Mr. Alex Cohen sent me an unprofessional email claiming that such a request to know about the expenses of my case was "absurd" if you can imagine that!! He actually believed it was "absurd" for me as his client to know expenses that come out of my own portion of recovery! Next, his firm withheld checks much longer after they were cleared for no justifiable reason. On one occasion, they claimed to have lost the check and asked the insurance to reissue it but after two weeks it was discovered that they had actually cashed the check they claimed to have lost leading to significant delays in my reimbursement which made me also concerned about his office organization and his ability to maintain the identity of my funds. Furthermore, he attempted to deduct expenses from before he was even my attorney and had an attorney client relationship. If I wasn't such a meticulous client, I may not have even noticed this. They crossed professional boundaries by yelling at me for not being patient enough in waiting for checks but when I would check with the insurance, the checks were already cashed by them and just sitting in their bank account for weeks!! They actually made an already stressful experience of having my home damaged much more stressful for me by their unprofessional ways and tactics. When they were finally done with my case, I absolutely could not wait to release this firm from my life. I tried to end things amicably with a nice professional note but they continued to show their unethical and unprofessional tactics until the bitter end by demanding more money after I terminated them, even though they were already overpaid for their law student's work. So glad they are out of my claim and should I need help in the future for any insurance claim I will be sure to hire actual attorneys who will represent me competently, compassionately and professionally, unlike how I was treated by this firm.
