Additionally, Mieke has developed an effective expertise in defending clients with mental illness who have been charged with crimes as a result of that mental illness. 

Prior to becoming a lawyer, Mieke ran a successful Los Angeles-based strategic planning firm, working with local and national politicians and writers and directors for television and film. She shaped strategies for professionals to strengthen and transform their careers and professional identities. She developed a reputation as a fiercely loyal advocate and thoughtful adviser.

Following law school, Mieke clerked for Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Cynthia Rayvis - specifically to assist Judge Rayvis on a yearslong, complex habeas case.

Kind and Understanding
Meike is the best! She's intelligent, knowledgeable and compassionate. We hired Mieke to represent my brother who found himself charged in a criminal matter. We were beside ourselves, worrying about the outcome. We had retained a prior attorney who we felt did was not representing him properly, and would have landed him in prison. When Mieke substituted in to the case, she was able to review everything with a fresh perspective and was able to negotiate the charges down to a misdemeanor and summary probation. Great Attorney!
Mieke didn't sugar coat anything, but successfully got the outcome we wanted. She told me what I exactly had to do and worked her magic in the courtroom. She has a reaching network of resources and relationships with court staff. If she didn't, she tried to build one every step of the way. I did not worry as she was present for every court date. Mieke has a positive attitude and set my mind at ease. I had a great feeling when we first spoke and I would definitely use her again.

WORKS MAGIC!!!
Mieke ter Poorten is an incredibly smart and savvy lawyer. She knows EVERYTHING about the court system. Mieke worked with me to get my DUI charge reduced to reckless driving. She made the entire process as painless and simple as a DUI case could be. She worked with the DMV to get my case set aside and my license wasn't even suspended, which is very rare. She was amazing on all fronts. We had multiple hearings at the DMV and she showed up every time ready to defend me. She knew all the facts about my case and was extremely helpful and professional. She has great relationships with the DMV and the DA. I will always be recommending her to all my friends if you are ever in need of her services. Truly an amazing lawyer and an even nicer person. Excellent Attorney; Went Above and Beyond My Expectations
Mieke is a genuine attorney, honest, and very hardworking. I sought her help after getting into quite a bit of trouble, it was twice over the last 3 years. Most recently, I had 3 criminal charges against me and I was facing major prison time. The case was very complex and the prosecution was unwilling to make any agreement other than just putting me away. They did not consider my special circumstance, and the evidence they had against me was overwhelming. It looked like a 1/100 chance of me not going to prison. Mieke, however, fought hard, and she never gave up. Her legal strategy was very well thought out. It was a very long battle, where there seemed to be no win in sight. But her patience, determination, and perseverance was like none other. She really went to bat for me, and in the end we were able to come to a deal that did not include prison time. Her care for her clients is unmatched. I am forever grateful.

She's exactly what you want
Mieke showed compassion to not only me but my wife as well from the very beginning. She helped get me out of jail and got all 16 of my charges dismissed by filing motions most lawyers wouldn't have taken the time to do. I felt from day one that she truly cared and wanted what was right for me and my family. It is very easy to get caught up in the system and swept through as just another conviction in Los Angeles County but Mieke fought till the end and never gave up for me. My family is very grateful for her extensive knowledge of criminal law and her determination through the whole process. The best attorney in the state of california!!!!!!
Mieke ter Poorten is not only a great attorney ,she is a AWESOME person as well. She represented me in a criminal case were I faced over ten years in prison. I didn't serve one day in jail and was able to walk away with a few fines. The way she handled my case didn't feel like any lawyer I've ever dealt with in the past. The absolute best....
In my true time of need and hardship Mieke stepped up and went beyond what I expected and absolutely was a true professional. Mieke took my situation very personal and was able to help me obtain a very difficult TRO (restraining Order) against a person that was not only harassing myself but also all my employees and a few companies I worked with. I was referred to Mieke by one of the smartest attorneys I know and for good reason. Mieke is an exceptional attorney who delivers on what she says she will do. I received a DUI at an incredibly inopportune time in my life and Mieke helped navigate what could have otherwise been an impossible situation for me. amazing!!
Mieke was the first person I was referred to when I was in need of an attorney and after talking to her on the phone for 5 minutes I knew she was going to be the most hardworking, and fair person I could ever get. she was knowledgeable, personable and helped me figure everything out. she answered all my questions and made thing seem less scary and intimidating. not only did she stay on my case and let them know who they were up against, but she kept me informed and not worried. "Better than I could've hoped for!"
I was facing DUI in possession of narcotics and the outcome seemed grim. Right from the beginning, Mieke's obvious competence and considerate and supportive demeanor calmed my nerves and eased my mind. She didn't sugar-coat things. She gave me a realistic breakdown of the best and worst case scenarios while remaining positive. Mieke's knowledge of the legal ramifications of my case and her ability to explain them helped me remain confident and optimistic. Seeing how hard she fought for me and her attitude toward my case, it really felt like Mieke took a personal interest and she kept me updated and informed throughout the entire process. Mieke and the results she produced were far better than I could have possibly hoped for. She literally did not stop fighting until she essentially made both charges go away. I can honestly say, without exaggeration, that right now...MIEKE IS MY HERO!
