Not worth the consultation fee

She listened sympathetically about my charges of discrimination and unjustified termination. She stated that she needed to research intermittent FMLA and then contacted me back stating that the case just wasn’t worth enough, and I could represent myself. If I wanted to represent myself...why would I ...have paid her $300 for a consultation fee?!

Because I determined that you did not qualify for FMLA, I thought you would spend more more money in attorney's fees than you were likely to get from the employer. That was the only reason I suggested that you represent yourself. Please contact me off-line to see if I can resolve any misunderstanding.

She will take your money, listen sympathetically, then disappear

She had no problem listening and sympathizing with my story of discrimination, harassment and wrongful termination. She led me to believe that she could help me, that she just needed to consult with her colleagues regarding the situation- she would be in touch. Over two months went by, I heard nothi...ng. When she finally did get around to returning my call she let me know she had other things to do, she wouldn't handle my case. I believe she never consulted anyone and was simply placating me for an hour of her time worth $300. If I had known she was going to disregard my situation I could have sought help elsewhere. Instead she buttered me up, took my money, then went about her merry way. Very unethical.

Addie, I am sorry you felt that way. I met with you for close to 2 hours and did offer advice on what I thought you could do at that time. Please contact me offline and I will see if there is anything more I can do for you. Best regards, Merle Joy Turchik

Avvo Rating

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
