I hired Leslie last year to assist me with a child custody/parenting plan dispute. The main reason I hired Leslie was to protect my legal rights as a parent. I was willing to let me ex-husband have primary custody of our child, but I wanted to retain joint legal custody, but my ex husband wanted to... have full legal custody as well. The main reason my ex husband wanted primary custody was to save money on child support, a fact that I repeatedly shared with Leslie and I had several emails and text messages to prove this. Within a month of retaining Leslie, my ex husband's attorney called Leslie and offered to drop all litigation and indicated my ex husband would comply with our current legal parenting plan. To my amazement and shock, Leslie advised me NOT to take this offer and STAY in litigation with my ex husband and continued down the path of court ordered counseling (which both my ex husband and my child repeatedly said that would not actively participate). I literally had less than 2 hours to make a decision and Leslie advised me it would be better to stay with the counseling approach. As she was the legal expert, I took Leslie's advice. The counselor Leslie recommended was an absolute train wreck, and was not effective at all. In fact, it took almost two months after the counselor was appointed before I heard from the counselor and scheduled sessions were few and far between. At the end of the day, I decided to terminate the counseling process and come to an agreement with ex husband and his attorney. The agreement I made with my ex husband was virtually the same one we had discussed before I hired Leslie. The main person that benefitted from all of this was Leslie as I paid her over $18,000 in legal fees and over $1,400 were paid in counseling fees. At the time my ex husband offered to drop all litigation, Leslie would have owed me approximately $4,000 of the $6,000 retainer I had paid. I had another counselor that I was seeing explicitly warn me that court ordered counseling very rarely works and the main beneficiaries would be my attorney and the counselor as they would get paid their fees. She said it would be a waste of time and money and she could not have been more correct. It still blows my mind that I paid an attorney this much money and she did not set one foot inside of a courtroom. I was stunned at how Leslie seemed reluctant to take any kind of aggressive action at all and at times, it almost seemed like she was on the side of my ex husband instead of fighting for my rights. All of the legal things that went my way in this case were ALL things that I did on my own (filing a motion for mediation, filing a motion to enforce parent time, specific language selections for our final legal agreement). At the end of the day, I paid Leslie an awful lot of money to come to the same agreement that I proposed to my ex husband at the very beginning of this legal process. If you are looking for an attorney who will aggressively fight for you and your legal rights, I would not recommend Leslie Satterlee. I found her judgment and her legal strategy in the case to be very questionable.
