About Bernard

Learn Bernard’s areas of practice.

Van is a founding partner of O'Steen & Harrison, PLC, where he works in the areas of dangerous and defective products, personal injury and business litigation.

He graduated from California Western University in 1968 (B.A.), where he was included in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities.  He graduated from Arizona State University College of Law in 1972 (J.D., cum laude).  He served as an editor on the Arizona State Law Journal.

Van was admitted to the State Bar of Arizona in 1972 and is admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of Arizona, the United States District Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the U.S. Court of Claims and the United State Supreme Court.

He is a past-president of the American Legal Clinic Association, past-chair of the American Bar Association Special Commitee on the Delivery of Legal Services, a member of the ABA Consortium on Legal Services and the Public, a member of the American Association for Justice and the Arizona Association for Justice.  He is a Fellow in the Arizona Foundation for Legal Services and Education.  He was a founding director of the Arizona Center for Law in the Public Interest.

Van is av-rated (the highest rating) by the prestigious Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory.  He also was voted--by other lawyers--for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America Consumer Guide.

Van is profiled in the publication Who's  Who in American Law.  He authored a legal advice column which appeared in various Arizona newspapers, and he is the author of numerous self-help packets which enable consumers to attend to many of their own legal needs without having to hire a lawyer.

In 1977, Van went to the U.S. Supreme Court and won the landmark case permitting lawyers, doctors and other professionals to advertise their services and fees.  As a result of this important consumer victory, the costs of legal services have declined.

Van was born in Tennessee in 1946 and moved to Arizona in 1959.

A good man, and a good lawyer
I’ve known Van for some time, even before I chose him to represent me in an accident I had several years ago. Being a lawyer, I knew I had a choice of many local lawyers but I’m glad I chose Van’s firm. He did an excellent job. Both Van and his staff were attentive and responsive. They achieved an excellent result and I sent my daughter to his office in Tucson for capable representation when she was injured while attending college. Van has also handled legal matters for my father-in-law and sister-in-law. We’re all convinced that there’s no better choice of injury lawyer in this market.

Van handles everything for us.
I am a business owner, and Van has been handling all of my legal needs for 35 years. Although he is well known as a personal injury attorney, over the years he's done everything for us: wills, divorces, formed corporations, and has defended us in several personal property damage cases, none of which we have ever lost. His staff is excellent, and his experience, negotiation skills and advice have been beneficial to us and our business on many occasions. The best recommendation I could provide for Van: I trust the man. Period.

personal experience with Bernard Van O'Steen
I had total confidence in Bernard Van O'Steen and his partners in handling my legal needs. And the results always worked out in a timely and very satisfactory manner. I would choose to make them my first call if I require an attorney again
