Matthew’s practice focuses on personal injury, civil litigation, criminal defense, and expungements. Prior to joining PEARSON, BUTLER, CARSON & COOK, Matthew, started his own practice where he helped litigate several multi-million dollar cases, including cases in state court and federal trial court as well as the 10th Circuit Federal Court of Appeals.
Matthew recently completed advanced personal injury training with the Personal Injury Training Institute to become a certified Motor Vehicle Occupant Injury specialist. This is a prestigious award that only three other attorneys in the state held at the time of completion. This training gives Matthew a unique advantage over other attorneys to help persons injured in accidents recover their damages. Additionally, Matthew was named one of Utah’s Top 40 Under 40 civil litigators by the National Trial Lawyers. This award is by invitation only and is only awarded to the nation’s top young trial attorneys.
Although Matthew’s criminal practice is now exclusively devoted to defending persons charged with crimes, he has experience from the prosecuting side as well. Matthew has worked in varying capacities for the Utah County Attorney’s Office, Salt Lake County Attorney’s Office, and the United States Attorney’s Office. Matthew also spent a summer as an extern for the Honorable Paul Cassell of the United States District Court of Utah. This experience from the prosecution side as well as the court side of cases gives Matthew a unique perspective in handling criminal cases to provide the best representation possible.
Matthew also has significant experience in expunging criminal records, clearing any arrests reports, criminal charges, or convictions off one’s criminal record, as well as removing qualified person from the sex offender registry. This service gives people who made mistakes early in their life an opportunity to get a clean slate and become proud of their name once again.
Matthew earned his bachelor’s degree in International Law & Diplomacy from Brigham Young University. He attended his first year of law school in Detroit, Michigan, where he was ranked in the top 5 percent in his first year class. Mr. Kober graduated and earned his law degree from the S.J. Quinney School of Law at the University of Utah, a Top 50 law school, where was a quarter-finalist in the Traynor Moot Court competition. When not advocating for his clients, Matthew enjoys playing the piano, waterskiing, and spending time with his family.

"Matt is everything a client could want in the high-stress situations he handles. He's smart, creative, and steadfastly pursues his clients' best interests no matter what it takes. He is personable and friendly, well-liked by his clients, co-workers, and the legal community. He understands the complexities of appropriately handling personal injury cases, and has the experience necessary in dealing with insurance companies."
"Matthew worked with me on a case in which the judge was going to rule against our client until Matthew provided the research to show that the judge was making a wrong decision. Once the judge observed Matthew's work he changed his mind and we won the argument. based on my experience working with him, I definitely recommend Matthew."
