About Joseph

Learn Joseph’s areas of practice.

A native Coloradan, I was born and raised in Boulder.  In 2001, I graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado receiving a B.S. in History.  I have served the U.S. as a systems program manager for over 15 years. Presently, I am a Lt. Colonel in the United States Air Force Reserve, stationed at Peterson AFB, CO.

I graduated Law School from Marquette University in 2009, was awarded my Juris Doctorate, and was admitted to the Wisonsin and Colorado Bars that year. While at Marquette I was inducted into Alpha Sigma Nu (Jesuit Honor Society) and the Marquette Pro Bono Society.  Additionally, I interned for the Wisconsin Supreme Court-Justice Patience Roggensack.

In 2010, I accepted a position as a Deptuty District Attorney in the 9th Judicial District and prosecuted misdemeanor and felony level crimes.  Since August 2012, I have been practicing predominantly Family Law.  However, I have also practiced criminal defense, as a deputy municipal prosecutor, and as court appointed counsel for Dependency and Neglect and contempt defense.

As a child of divorce, an Air Force officer, family man, and a driven attorney, I believe that my personal and professional experiences aid me in relating to clients. Moreover, I feel this makes me distinctively qualified in the practice of family law.   I am very aware of the effects this process has on the family; most notably, children.  I am keenly alert that the effects of divorce are prevalent long after the formal ending of a relationship.  I will make it a point to keep my clients focused on their children and how their actions today will impact their children’s tomorrows.  If possible, I believe that my primary goal is to aid in an amicable resolution outside the courtroom.  Yet, there are situations where there is no other option than to resolve issues in court.  Should that be the case, my extensive trial and litigation experience has prepared me to represent my clients in a courtroom setting.

I have every hope that I can continue to spend time in our community promoting family law issues, community advocacy and restorative justice.  I enjoy the outdoors and all that Colorado has to offer.  Mostly, I am glad to be home and to have the ability to serve the Front Range.

great lawyer
I hate using lawyers and think most are incompetent. However i found a great one in Mr. Ditlow. He helped me resolve a custody issue with my sons mother and was great to work with. He communicated well, was detailed, and was very knowledgeable. He returned every email and phone call i made to him in a very timely manner and actually explained things to me in a way that i could understand. I hope i never need him again but if i do he is my man.

Dedicated attorney
Dear potential future client, I’ve been where you are at this very moment, looking at reviews and thinking or responding to a divorce. It can be a scary moment to face alone. So much can depend on these next few actions. So please take a moment to breath and read the following. I was married for 15 years at the time the divorce was finalized. I was blindsided by my ex-wife's choice when I got the paperwork served to me. I was heartbroken and felt like a failure as a husband and more importantly as a father. I had three beautiful kids, an almost 20-year military career, a house/assets, and now a future that was in a limbo of some extreme altering from one person’s decision. It was overwhelming. So many thoughts and feelings flooded my mind and body. I knew I needed help, and quickly, so my response was to find the right people to help me through this process, which started with internet searches, reading testimonials, and making phone calls just like you, which lead me to Jad and Kara. If I can save you the wasted time please stop and call Marrison Family Law. I was quickly put in touched with Jad and Kara. Jad and Kara respond quickly and deliberately. They were able to guide and inform me of everything I needed to know and act upon to protect myself and my interests. Quickly the ex-spouse realized my legal team was head and shoulders better than her lawyer. She also realized that it was in her best interest to negotiate and play fairly otherwise she would be facing a very difficult time along with mounting legal fees and what Kara would coin the weight of a legal whale crushing down on her. This is extremely important moment for you, and there are major life decisions being made that are going to have an impact on your future. Please do not go at it alone; pick a team that has a proven track record. Listen divorce is brutal for everyone involved even if it is mutual and I would suggest having experts to help you. There are many different lawyers you can choose from, but I can personally vouch for Jad, Kara, and Marrison law firm. From the first contact until notice to withdrawal it was handled delicately and most professionally at all times. They gave me something that I was not able to find with other places I had talked to before, which was a reassurance that they had my back no matter what. Throughout the entire process, I did not have to worry unlike my ex-wife, which allowed me to place my focus on other more important aspects of my life, like spending time with my kids, getting the things I needed to help me move forward, and peace of mind, it is critical that you can think clearly to make decision. You have heard it over and over, if you are facing a legal issue get a lawyer. Men as a guy I went through great lengths to make sure my legal team was going to defend my rights as a male. This is them. Ladies, as a guy I would have not wanted to know that my ex-wife had just hired Jad and Kara to defend her. To Jad and Kara, sincerely I am forever grateful that our paths crossed and you helped bring closure to this life-changing event for me. A simple thank you doesn’t ever seem to be enough. However, thank you for what you did for this single father — to the rest of you still reading. I wish you the peace of mind I had while going through this process and I hope you call Marrison law firm and request Jad and Kara. It's a choice you will later thank yourself for doing.

Look no further
If you are getting divorced, you need an attorney, and arguably, even if you are well-acquainted with the legal arena. I started my divorce without one and soon realized that I needed one, which was one of the two best decisions I made. The second, and of equal weight, was hiring Joseph A. Ditlow (JAD) of Marrison Family Law. If you don’t know what to look for in an attorney, the internet provides lists of standard characteristics that every good attorney should have. JAD has them all, but let me explain what sets him apart even further: JAD won’t compromise his integrity or reputation for a client. He careful filtered the information I gave him to ensure I was being honest and thorough, giving him a clear understanding of the coming battle. Divorces are charged with emotion. It’s easy for a client to think of an attorney as a counselor and lose track of time. Counselors are far less expensive than attorneys. Still, attorneys need a degree of history and relational information for context. JAD was mindful of the clock and my strained budget and masterfully helped me stay on track and task. More so, though, JAD captured the information he needed to understand me and my concerns. My case took unexpected and somewhat shocking turns and dives that placed enormous and sometimes short-notice demands on assessing how to respond and proceed. JAD remained unshaken, professional, and hugely supportive. His confidence and encouragement was profoundly meaningful and beneficial to me, and his ability to shift gears with speed, accuracy, and clarity exceeded measurable value. I was sometimes given information I didn’t like, or that I thought was wrong or found unfair. JAD understood and helped me face some facts with candor but grace, even when I responded with a lack of grace myself. There was a lot of noise in my case, and because there is only so much time in the court room, we had to discern very carefully what really mattered. JAD focused on my desired outcomes while advising me on what was realistic, what should be our priorities, and what risks should be abandoned until we reached an agreement based on what I could live with. In my case, his method and approach was monumentally successful. There were several things he did that were really the glue that held everything together: uncompromisingly ethical; researching; exhaustively exploring and/or pursuing preferred options with opposing counsel; having flexibility; making connections; really hearing me; checking in on me; being tirelessly attentive and responsive to my case, even after hours; educating me; coaching me on the value of timing and waiting; his own self-discipline; and especially, meeting me where I am based on my world view. JAD and I were together on my case for a long time. Time can make or break any relationship because it provides the opportunity to really see what someone is made of. I am certain that my case is only quiet for the moment, and not really closed. Therefore, knowing what JAD is made of, we will be working together again, eventually. I don’t know what JAD’s personal worldview is. He has never volunteered it, and I have never asked. What I do know is this: My worldview prompts me to thank God for him.

Best Lawyer in the state of Colorado
I hired Marrison Family Law for my custody case, I was then given the attorney whom was going to take the case. I met Joseph and from the start he got the case going immediately. The mother of my child kept my son away from me for over a year. We ended up going to court and Joseph won me 50/50 custody and decision making. That was more than I had expected. The whole time joseph was courteous, understanding, but very strong and destroyed Colorado legal services in court ( respondents attorney). This attorney is someone who never gives up on your case and truly helps fathers get the parenting they deserve with their child. My case was very difficult in which I had a mother who tried every trick in the book to keep me away from my son. I'm happy with Marrison Family Law and especially Joseph Ditlow.

Sleeping Case File
Mr. Ditlow and I spoke briefly on the phone when he was assigned my "sleeping" case file after my attorney had left the firm. It hadn't be active for 9 months. A few months later, my case became active! I have never met Jad face-to-face. Yet he was able to verse himself quite well with my case in a matter of days. Even while I was on vacation, he handled everything for me in and out of court. I was ecstatic with how he approached the situation and was able to get everything wrapped up neat and clean... pretty much with a bow on top, take care of a few snags and close my case beautifully!!! I am extremely glad to have had Mr. Ditlow on my side as my attorney!! He kept me in the loop, fully informed. He made me feel comfortable, even while I was out of state and knowing that he hadn't been with me from the beginning. He was able to close my case with more than I thought possible! I can not wait to shake his hand and tell him thank you! I am sincerely blessed and pleased with what he was able to do in one months worth of time!!! I highly recommend Mr. Ditlow!!!!

Recommendation for Joseph A. Ditlow and the Law Office of Angela Roff
I would recommend Joseph A. Ditlow, who works at the law office of Angela Roff, to anyone looking for a trustworthy lawyer. Both he and Angela helped me navigate the divorce process. It was an extremely challenging 2-year period for me, and with their help, I managed to transform my life all on my own. Both lawyers always knew the law, kept their deadlines, kept me on task as to what needed to happen and, generally, kept emotions out of all of it. I hope I don't need their services again... But I would most certainly look to them first.

Competant, Compassionate and Insightful
After speaking to several attorneys about a serious traffic infraction involving a teenager, we settled on Jad Ditlow for several reasons. Foremost, Jad is a person of integrity who we felt an immediate trust for. This trust was born out of his ability to be compassionate towards our circumstances, his knowledge of the charges and the system, and the realistic interpretation of possible outcomes. He did not sugar coat these possible outcomes nor promise us too much in terms of possible outcomes. He was able to connect with our teen as well which was important for us. Jad was not a high pressure lawyer and even advised that we could possibly handle this case on our own but he gave us such a peace of mind that we insisted on retaining his services. He reviewed the legal process with us and was clear about his process (including billing procedures). After speaking with us, Jad researched our case and contacted the appropriate authorities to negotiate a lesser charge based on our circumstances. He made several important recommendations to us that assisted in attaining these lesser charges as well. Entering into court, Jad walked us through the procedures and prepared us and our teen well for what we were going to experience. Because of his preparation and good communication skills with us, there were no surprises to us on that day. We were not disappointed at any point along the way with Jad's services and I would highly recommend him to others.

To new and inexperienced for me.
"JAD" Ditlow is an attorney I would not use again. He did me a complete disservice and I am still suffering from it. His retainer was way WAY OVER THE TOP! Guess that is the only way he can keep clients from changing to another and probably more competent lawyer. Not some one I would use again or who I could recommend with any confidence. Check out his record or cases, where her worked and for HOW LONG? The more questions you ask, the better you will understand.

Response from Joseph Ditlow December 5, 2013
It is the goal of myself and the law office of Angela Roff PC to provide competent, intelligent, probative, and affordable legal counsel. It is concerning when clients are dissatisfied with the outcome of their case; sadly, it is sometimes unavoidable. Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions or concerns. ~JD
