I have dedicated the last 40 years to defending people charged with serious crimes in state and federal court. For 13 years I was a member of the Colorado State Public Defender's Office. During that time I represented thousands of individuals charged with crimes ranging from fraud and theft to first degree murder. I had over a hundred felony jury trials; most of those cases involving crimes of violence. After leaving the defender system in 1997 I worked primarily for the Alternate Defense Counsel, a conflicts public defender agency in Colorado that contracted with private lawyers to provide representation in criminal cases where the public defender's office had a conflict of interest. My work for that agency centered on the defense of people charged with first degree murder. I also qualified to participate in the Criminal Justice Act program administered by the Federal District Court for the District of Colorado. The CJA program provided legal representation to indigent defendants facing federal criminal charges in Colorado. In addition to defending impoverished clients as appointed counsel, I developed a private practice as a retained defense counsel. I was a member of the Kobe Bryant defense team and also defended Charles Garrison in a highly publicized murder trial that took place in Eagle, Colorado. I was lead counsel in the landmark case of United States v. Smith which resulted in the acquittal of all defendants on charges of price fixing in the gas pipeline construction industry. In 2017 I represented Peter Fiori in Boulder County District Court when the District Attorney brought felony charges against him for allegedly abusing his position as a member of the Nederland Town Council in bidding on a piece of property that was also of interest to the town of Nederland. I continue to be deeply involved in the defense of complex felony cases. My recent jury trials in federal court have centered on fraud, tax evasion and aggravated robbery. I have extensive federal and state court experience in wiretap litigation and narcotics conspiracy cases.

Mark Johnson is not only an excellent attorney he is also a good man. He educated me thru the entire process from receiving a federal grand jury subpoena all the way to trial. We dug in and fought the government all the way and let me tell you it was not easy. When faced with a situation like this...
"I endorse this lawyer completely. I have been a criminal defense lawyer for 24 years and have had the distinct honor of knowing Mr. Johnson for over a decade. He is the most organized, thorough and highly skilled advocate I have seen, even in the most complex of cases. Mr. Johnson is brilliant inside and outside of the courtroom and he is completely dedicated to his clients."
