About Diedre

Biography

I spent three years at McKinsey & Company before practicing law. That training still shapes the work: we model the tax and the downside first. Asset protection, estate tax planning, and special needs trusts for individuals and families whose wealth arrived through equity, inheritance, or investing.

Estate planning for families whose wealth is concentrated - in company equity, in real estate, in a portfolio, or in a trust someone else created. We plan for the tax and the transfer together, across Colorado, California, and Wyoming.

I spent three years at McKinsey & Company before practicing law. That training still shapes the work: we model the tax and the downside first. Asset protection, estate tax planning, and special needs trusts for individuals and families whose wealth arrived through equity, inheritance, or investing.

Special needs planning is a national part of our practice. We draft first- and third-party special needs trusts that protect a vulnerable beneficiary's government benefits, advise trustees administering them, and have served as an expert witness in special needs and Medicaid litigation.

We use limited liability companies, including Wyoming close LLCs, to hold rental and investment real estate and interests in private companies. Structured properly they put distance between your assets and a future creditor, and they simplify what passes to the next generation.

Estate tax, gift tax, generation-skipping transfer tax, and capital gains, usually all four at once. We plan around liquidity events and concentrated positions, and we work alongside the CPA you already use rather than replacing them.

Warm, Intelligent & Creative

My husband and I were worried about estate taxes and about making sure our kids get the money we're leaving them in a way that helps and doesn't hurt them if anything happens to us while they're still young. Diedre helped us choose a strategy that would minimize taxes but more important the money ...will be spent on things that help our kids until they're mature enough to handle those sorts of decisions themselves. And then it can't be taken away from them if they get divorced. I didn't even know you could do stuff like that. She took time to explain everything to us, sometimes twice. We are both really very happy that we found Diedre.

Ahead of Tight Deadline

We needed healthcare and financial planning documents in a hurry due to a medical situation. Not only did Diedre handle our situation with sensitivity and care, she exceeded our timing expectations. We have already recommended her to friends.

Attn Clients: Please Email [email protected]

A very serious medical emergency required that Diedre relocate to where her husband could care for her and supervise the hospital's care of her serious medical condition. While she has been under treatment for many months, some of her legal work has been put on hold. It appears that although she is n...ot yet able to return to work full-time, she has addressed some clients's unfinished projects and is attempting to direct all of her time outside of the hospital to meeting her clients's needs. If you have a legal project that is unfinished, I am sure Attorney Braverman will address it within the boundaries of her medical constraints. Write her directly at the email address in the title, and be sure to include how to best reach you in your email, as well as what you are most hoping will be done right away. While her medical issues kept her unavailable recently, she is a highly caring and highly ethical person who is doing everything in her power to provide her clients with the best possible outcomes. Anonymous complaints don't allow her to address your issues. Contact her directly with specific needs and wants, and a way for her to reach you so that she can meet those needs and wants.

Understands Sophisticated Techniques & Truly Cares

We are fortunate enough to have what could become an estate-taxable estate. Attorney Braverman walked us through the various techniques we could choose to reduce or eliminate estate tax after both my spouse and I are gone, and our children inherit. She also understood the other end of the wealth spec...trum, and together we created a special-needs trust for our disabled child so that she can continue to receive state healthcare. (It doesn't hurt that she's been quoted on Special Needs Trusts in the Wall Street Journal twice this year alone.) Attorney Braverman clearly understood the technical details of every strategy we chose to employ but didn't ignore the human side of planning either. Our detailed conversation about naming successor trustees has given both my spouse and me tremendous peace of mind. And Attorney Braverman also gave us educational materials that she wrote for us to give them on just what a trustee is expected to do. I know that when the laws change, as they constantly do, Diedre Braverman will be prepared to address those changes in our plan to ensure that it works the same way ten years from now as it's designed to work today.

Diedre took the time to go beyond our initial assumptions and explained how we can benefit from strategies no one had explained to us before.

Estate planning lawyer | Dec 30

Relationship: Worked together on matter

"I must disclose that I have already given Diedre my highest endorsement - I married her. But marriage aside, Diedre is among the most talented estate planning attorneys in the country. Diedre's national reputation is only surpassed by the level of care that she provides to her clients. She chose to practice estate planning and special needs planning law for personal reasons, and I believe that drives her passion for her work. I have met many of her clients and I attest first hand that they love her. I have co-counseled with Diedre on several matters and her legal and analytical skills always amaze me. Needless to say, she is my go to person when I am dealing with particularly complex issues in my own estate planning practice. More importantly, she would be that attorney even if she wasn't my wife. I whole heartedly endorse Diedre!"

Relationship: Fellow lawyer in community

"I have known Diedre for the past 12 years as a fellow member of Wealth Counsel and, more recently, the Southern California Institute. I've had the pleasure of attending one of her seminars on special needs planning as well. Diedre's work is top notch, and I can whole-heartedly endorse her."

Relationship: Fellow lawyer in community

"I heartily endorse this lawyer's work. Diedre is an exceptional attorney who stands head and shoulders above her colleagues. I have known Diedre since 2002 when we met as members of a national organization for estate planning attorneys. I initially served as one of Diedre's mentors, but she quickly honed her craft and proceeded to take her practice to a new level of client service, counseling, education and innovation. Diedre is one of the brightest and most ethical of attorneys I have had the good fortune to know. She has developed a caring, compassionate practice working with clients with minor children, and her expertise in special needs planning makes her the "go-to" lawyer for many of my colleagues. Diedre continually works to improve her knowledge and skills and usually sets the standard for other attorneys to follow. She is a board certified specialist, and even though she's a Stanford Law alumna, this Berkeley graduate could not recommend her more highly."

"I endorse this lawyer's work. I have known Diedre for several years through the Laureate in Wealth Strategies Program offered by the Southern California Institute. Diedre is an exceptionally bright estate planning attorney with a passion and commitment to protecting those with special needs. I have had an opportunity to collaborate with Diedre at the Southern California Institute - analyzing and testing high level estate planning issues, designing solutions and presenting them to clients. She is excellent."

Avvo Rating

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
