I would highly recommend hiring James as your attorney. He was thorough, attentive, and easy to work with. James is a fine legal representative for criminal defense. Based upon his years of experience he will be able to tell you pretty much what you can expect at the outset. He will be honest with you about what you can expect as an outcome given the particulars of your unique circumstances. He charges a ...flat fee which is a big plus, as hourly billing from a trust fund, as many attorneys are fond of doing, can spiral out of control pretty quick. I paid up front and then was represented all the way up to trial and sentencing if appropriate. Whichever way the case goes, you're paid and covered for the duration. My case was dragged out almost 2 years, during which time I didn't have to worry about the state of my 'trust balance'. My case had some challenging aspects in the respect that my record contained some ugly marks from many years ago which made going to trial and winning the case a pretty slim prospect- he was honest and up-front about my odds of winning a 'not guilty' verdict. With this in mind he was able to win me what I consider to be a best-case scenario outcome in which I had the 3 charges I was faced with reduced down to 1 lesser charge. This was accomplished WITH the District Attorney not being willing to budge off of the original 3 charges. The DA had a very hard stance on plea bargaining in my case. Basically, not offering any reduction from the original charges all the way up to the weekend before trial. They offered a plea deal that was exactly like the original charges and penalties, the only difference being not having to go through a trial. Atty. Colgan went above and beyond the call of duty to achieve a much better outcome, in the last hours leading up to trial. It was a great relief.
