I am a Colorado criminal defense attorney with 20 years of experience. I am a former prosecutor (14 years) and have extensive courtroom and trial experience. I have participated all levels of criminal offenses ranging from Traffic Offenses, Misdemeanors to serious felonies, including First Degree Murder. I am one of the country's foremost experts on legal marijuana and marijuana impaired driving. I lecture throughout the country and internationally on the subject. I have spent the better part of a decade training law enforcement and prosecutors how to do DUI cases. I am an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law

Prosecution Background. I find that my background is incredibly valuable to clients. I understand both law enforcement and prosecution culture and because I spent years teaching in both spheres, I have a deep understanding of both institutional strengths and weaknesses. I can read a police report and determine the level of training as well as the quality of the investigation quickly. I also understand what it takes to get the prosecutor to see my client's side of the story, or the weaknesses in their case.

Client Approach - being charged with a crime can evoke many emotions and is often a source of stress and anxiety. People make mistakes and I provide my clients with:

  • Court Process - what is happening in the case and how does it progress? I provide my clients with a detailed explanation of the procedural aspect of the case and provide what is really happening in a case including explaining terminology, what the different actors (Prosecutor, Judge, Police, Witnesses) can and can't do.
  • Law - what does the law say and mean including what are the consequencesDiscovery - Discovery refers to all of the evidence that police and the prosecutors have collected in a case including reports, witness statements, photos and videos, test results and other items depending upon the complexity of the case.
  • Negotiation - meeting with the prosecutor and persisting in getting the best possible outcome for a client.
  • Mitigation/Exoneration - working with a client to provide determine any details that establish that he/she did not commit the crime, including any necessary follow up investigation. Where a client did engage in the charged conduct, what have they done or what can they do to lessen the consequences.
  • Motions - this process generally refers to the process of addressing constitutional issues - did the police comply with the requirements espoused in the 4th, 5th and 6th Amendments of the Constitution? If a case is headed on a trial track, it may also address what evidence will be allowed or prohibited.
  • Trial - If a case goes to trial it is critical to know what is at stake. Knohwing the evidence, the skills and capability of the prosecutor as well as the demeanor of the judge are important. I always provides clients with the landscape of a trial including my strategy and realistic outcomes. There is always a level of uncertainty and unpredictability about trial. Not only does it require being prepared, but it also necessitates being nimble and being quick to adapt to take advantage of opportunities.

Specialties - while I am experienced in all range of misdemeanor and felony cases there are several areas where I possess high levels of experience and expertise:

  • DUI - I spent the better part of decade teaching Colorado law enforcement and prosecutors about all aspects of DUI investigations. As a result I have an extensive understanding of how DUI investigations are conducted including the different levels of training that law enforcement receive. This is a critical piece of information in defending DUI cases and I have a pretty good gauge of the level of a training a police officer has based upon the content of their police report. Further, I know the technical and scientific aspects of both breath and blood testing. There are other attorneys who are DUI specialists, but few have the background that I possess.
  • MARIJUANA DUI - I am one of the country's formost experts on marijuana impaired driving. For anyone charged with this crime, I am simply the best defense attorney in Colorado to handle your case.
  • MARIJUANA CRIMES - Although marijuana is "legal," there are still a great many crimes that people can be chared with involving marijuana. I was on the frontlines of marijuana legalization beginning in 2009 when regulated medical marijuana exploded on the scene after Colorado voters passed recreational marijuana I was a sitting member on one of the Governor's committees on Edibles and Servicing Sizes and a reserve member on the committe on Cultivations and grow limits. Whether a person is charged with Possession, Possession with Intent, Consumption, Cultivation, or Distribution, I can help. Marijuana law is a confusing mash of Constitutional protections coupled with statutory provisions and there are conflicts between the two that may avail a person charged with these crimes additional defenses. If you are choosing a lawyer to represent you for this kind of case, most wouldn't know the diference between a Hemp plant and a marijuana plant, or the difference between a plant or a clone or the difference between CBD and THC. If you are charged with any marijuana crime, I can definitely help.

Incredibly helpful and professional
We hired Chris for a felony menacing case. He was incredibly helpful throughout the process. He answered all our questions in a timely manner and kept us updated. We were able to get our charges dropped completely thanks to him and his services didn't break the bank. We're incredibly grateful.

| Consulted Attorney
This attorney is down to earth, his consultations are of compassion for his job. He provides detailed consultations despite knowing your intentions on cases. This is an attorney that will fight for your rights and listens to your concerns. I have reached out to many others and this attorney was the only compassionate attorney not working in the interest of money, his interest is justice and in knowing that the money will come. Justice is his first priority, I was shocked he took the time to speak with me. Highly recommended, anyone reading this, you have found the right attorney to fight for justice and not a pay check.

Top-Notch Professional
100++% Satisfaction -- Originally, Chris Halsor was not the defense attorney I hired, however, I am beyond happy (and quite LUCKY, frankly) that he was "assigned" to my case. His outstanding knowledge and expertise of the DUI laws (top in the state) helped me to better understand what I was up against if I decided to push for a trial - no misleading fluff or sugar-coating. Although we didn't go to trial, his professionalism, guidance and honesty gave me the confidence I needed to make my decisions throughout the entire (stressful) process. (I would've enjoyed seeing him work at a trial!) I would hire him again in a heartbeat and would recommend him to anyone needing DUI legal representation.

Caring, Professional, Responsive, Knowledgeable, 10/10 <- A great a person and somehow, he manages to be an even better lawyer.
Chris is by far the best legal counsel I have had to date. He is extremely responsive and I really felt as though he took an interest in truly assisting me with my case, not just processing my matters or 'completing the job'. He went over and beyond and time and again has gone to bat for me even after my time in court was finished. EVEN NOW - Chris remains available to me, he responds to my inquiries and concerns, calls me back, texts me back, responds to my emails and has stated he will continue to do so until I finish my sentence - that is value that I simply cannot put a dollar on and value that no other lawyer has given me. I hope to never be in need of legal counsel again but if I am, Chris Halsor will be the person I call and look to lean on and support. I don't use those terms loosely, I know I can rely on Chris for his care and support. He is a credible source and his knowledge of all things needed continue to leave me in awe, if he doesnt know the answer - he will find it. Chris even went as far to assist me with an out of state case, he found me the lawyer I needed as it was out of state but then stayed present and active and even remained ontop of the person I hired for my out of state case. I have already recommended Chris's services to folks I have met who are in need, and I will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

Strategic, Skilled and Knowledgable
I hired Chris as counsel on a DUI Marijuana charge and within 2 months, my charges were dropped and I walked without punishment. This man has trained the cops that patrol our streets in properly detecting if a driver IS TRULY under the influence of marijuana. He has practically written the book that has been adopted by sheriff's departments across the country. He can spot any inconsistency in the a report and any "BS" from miles away. He knew every single answer to all the questions I had for him (which was a ridiculous amount). In my case, he was able to dissect the police report instantly and could tell this officer was not trained properly, he had essentially predicted what the outcome was going to be in our first meeting. He was reassuring and very professional, from how he conducted himself in the courtroom to the phone calls we had, I knew I was in great hands with him representing me. He talk's with passion and is very mindful in everything he says in the courtroom. He was very much respected by the state DA as well making Chris is an absolute powerhouse attorney. I would fully recommend his counsel to anyone in need, especially regarding a DUI involving Cannabis. Chris, you saved my life and I dare say, I love you for it. Thank you.

Chris Halsor - Top DUI Lawyers in Denver/Jefferson Counties
I hired Chris to represent me in my DUI case in Jefferson County. He is a well respected lawyer in the court systems in Denver and the surrounding counties in Colorado. Chris takes the time to review all the details and possible outcomes to each case that he takes on. Chris worked with both the Prosecutors and the District Attorney in my case to reach a plea to a DUI with a high BAC. I would highly recommend Chris to anyone needing representation in their case for either DUI or traffic violations in Denver or surrounding counties.

Miss. I was a client of Chris and Molly Jansen Legal
Chris was hired as my attorney in representing my case for a DWI involving an auto accident. This was a first time occurrence, and Chris worked with the DMV and judicial system to have my sentence reduced to a DWAI. He also provided me with the guidance and steps I would need in order to sign up for necessary education classes, probation, etc and steps to take for early re-instatement. In addition, while we were in court awaiting to be called in front of the judge, Chris heard another victims situation, and without hesitation he offered advice to the District Attorney to allow the victim to serve their sentence, by law, in another county which did offer the required services the victim needed. He did not know this victim and they were not his client, but he felt compelled to share his knowledge and expertise to the courts in order to help the victim's situation at hand. Chris has prior experience training police officers how to test for alcohol related offenses, and has been able to use this expertise in fighting for his client's cases. Chris was always responsive, knowledgeable, comforting, and overall a genuine caring person who treats his clients with the utmost respect and importance. He and everyone at Molly Jansen Legal have been great to work with, and I highly recommend their services.

Attack dog lawyer
Chris is a very good lawyer. He keeps in touch, which for me was very important. He is also very detailed. Incredibly knowledgeable as well as a great litigator. His quick responses mingled with a little sarcasm is fun to watch as his client. He also has spent time in the DA's office as part of their team. So he understands not just the strategy but also how things can be accomplished in other ways. Long winding story short he is very good. I called him my "doberman" attorney.

I got a DUI last September and I have never felt worse about myself. At first I was not going to get a lawyer but after listening to good advise from many people, I changed my mind. I met Chris and it was the best choice I made. I met him at the courthouse and his attitude, friendliness, honesty and compassion made me feel so much better and that I was not alone or some low life criminal. I made a huge mistake which I needed to deal with, learn from and never let it happen again. During my probation period I had sold my house and moved to Arkansas but could not live there because of the probation. My boy friend lived there and I remained in Denver. After finishing everything required by the court I contacted Chris once again to help with a motion to get an early release from probation so I could go home. He was so helpful in taking care of this and after everything was said and done the court terminated my probation. Chris is a fantastic lawyer and I am forever grateful for his legal help and his friendship!

First Offense
Had the unfortunate need to hire Chris for a first time drunk driving offense. I've found him to be extremely knowledgeable about all the ins/outs of the entire process & was immediately put at ease. The everything was thoroughly explained, leaving me to feel very confident in his skills and experience in handling these types of cases. He has always been available to answering any and all questions I have had, no matter how small. I came into this process feeling like because of type of offense, I was less then. I'm leaving it having been treated with nothing but kindness, understanding, and respect. Would highly reccomend to anyone who may find themselves needing any form of representation.
