Thomas Codevilla is Partner at SK&S Law Group where he focuses on Data Privacy, Security, Commercial Contracts, Corporate Finance, and Intellectual Property.
Thomas’s clients range from startups to large enterprises. He specializes in working with businesses to build risk-based data privacy and security systems from the ground up. He has deep experience in GDPR, COPPA, FERPA, CALOPPA, and other state privacy laws. He holds the CIPP/US and CIPP/E designations from the International Association of Privacy Professionals.
Alongside his privacy practice he brings a decade of public and private transactional experience, including formations, financings, M&A, corporate governance, securities, intellectual property licensing, manufacturing, regulatory compliance, international distribution, China contracts, and software-as-a-service agreements.
Thomas began his legal career at a large law firm and refined his client servicing skills in-house as head lawyer at a venture-backed robotics startup. Along the way he obtained his Chartered Financial Analyst® designation, enabling him to understand all aspects of a business, not just its immediate legal issues. His range of experience enables him to provide high-quality legal work while communicating with clients on their terms.
Thomas has published several articles on privacy and legal services in Colorado legal publications and law reviews, provided free legal advice at women’s shelters and legal clinics, and mentored many law students. He is a member of the Colorado Association of Corporate Counsel Emerging Leaders Group and a former member of the Colorado Intellectual Property Inn of Court. He also works closely with the charity First Descents planning and participating in fundraisers for young adults living with cancer.
During law school at the University of Colorado, Thomas worked in the Entrepreneurial Law Clinic, the Deming Center Venture Fund, the Journal of Telecommunications and High Technology Law, and the chambers of a federal bankruptcy judge. Personally, he enjoys alpine climbing, skiing, his rose garden, and attempting to keep up with his nine nephews and nieces.
