Ashley M. Opfer got her undergraduate degree in theatre and dance education from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa in 2008. While completing her student teaching experience in Minneapolis, Minnesota she saw many of her students struggling with legal problems. She decided that she could not help these students in the way that she wanted to help as a teacher and so she made the decision to attend law school in order to be an attorney who would advocate for children and families.
Ashley received her Juris Doctorate from the University of Denver, Sturm College of Law in May of 2012 and was admitted to practice law in Colorado the same year. During her time in law school, Ashley honed her advocacy and litigation skills as a member of the University's National Trial Team. Before joining Stowell P.C., Ashley tailored her legal research and writing skills as a clerk for the Honorable Robert McGahey in the 2nd Judicial District and learned many of the practical skills necessary as a domestic relations intern in Littleton, Colorado. Ashley has been an attorney at Stowell P.C. since November of 2012 and practices in the areas of family law, juvenile law, and estate planning. She is passionate about and committed to helping families through the legal system.
Outside of the practice of law, Ashley is married and has one son. She has a sheltie and enjoys snowboarding, swimming, camping and bike riding.

My personal opinion is that Ashley Opfer and this firm were incompetent in our case. Ms. Opfer is barely two years out of law school but is supposedly the owner of this practice. Was told that we had a very favorable case in family law jurisdictional issue after I paid them specifically for due d...
Troy, We are sorry that you were disappointed with your legal representation. Your statements about Ms. Opfer's experience and length of practice are false. We agree that, based on the facts you initially presented to us, you had a very favorable jurisdictional case. However, there were significant facts that were omitted in our initial consultation with you and that were not disclosed to us prior to the hearing in your matter when they were raised by the opposing party. We do strongly encourage our clients to be open and honest with us at the outset of a case so that we can give accurate counsel and advice. We are disappointed that you claim that we did not work with you in regards to your legal fees and did not meet with you to discuss the issue. We met with you on at least two occasions after your case was resolved, each of these meetings being at no cost. We also offered to meet with you to reach an amicable resolution after the Supreme Court Attorney Regulation Counsel determined that your complaints against us were false and unfounded. You declined to meet with us and failed to respond to any attempt we made to communicate with you. We understand that you have raised similar grievances with other attorneys you have worked with in the past. We are sorry that you have felt let down by the legal community and the judicial system as a whole. We hope that any experiences you have with the legal system in the future are more agreeable. Sincerely, Opfer & Stowell P.C.

I went to Stowell PC for an initial consultation and was painted a very pretty picture, I was told my case was open and shut and that it should be easy. I asked what a ballpark figure would be for the cost of my child support modification to be done it, I was told around 1800 dollars but that it coul...
Colleen, We are sorry that you were disappointed with your legal representation and that you feel that the financial obligations of your case were not adequately explained to you. We always explain in an initial consultation that we cannot tell you what your legal case will cost at the beginning of the case because legal fees are so dependent upon how each individual case progresses and the issues that arise in that case. We ask for a lower initial retainer than many attorneys in the area because we understand that court cases can get expensive and we want people who cannot afford the entire cost of a case upfront to have the option of being represented by an attorney. We feel that we work with clients to budget for legal expenses. As you are aware, we bill every two weeks so that you can see the status of your retainer and we send out emails frequently to let you know what is coming up in the next month or two so that you can prepare. We believe that this gives our clients a reasonable amount of time and information to manage and maintain the financial obligations of their case. If, however, our request for additional funds goes unanswered or ignored our only choice is to withdraw from representation. We cannot work on cases where appropriate funds are not being provided and we do not wish to incur more attorney fees for you than you can reasonably pay off in the future. We apologize that you were not satisfied with your modified child support amount. Sometimes a "win" in the legal world does not feel like much of a win emotionally because of the fight that it took to get there. In the end your child support was increased. We do, however, strongly encourage our clients to be open and honest with us at the outset of a case so that we can give accurate counsel and advice. With regards to your complaint about your attorney's parenting advice, we at Opfer & Stowell P.C. believe that, as long as there are no child endangerment issues, it is in children's best interest to have both parent's active and involved in their children's lives. We do not believe in restricting a parent's parenting time for no reason. We will not advise our clients to do anything that we believe harms the children. I am sorry that your child's father is continually letting you and your child down. The parenting plan that you agreed to and signed was, we believe, a good parenting plan. We hoped that it would set you and your family up for a successful co-parenting relationship in which you could both work together in the mutual best interest of your children. We are sorry if the parenting plan is not being adhered to and it is not serving its function. We wish you the best of luck in the future. Sincerely, Opfer & Stowell P.C.

Throughout my divorce proceedings, Ashley did her best to move things along even though the lawyer for my ex was not very responsive. She did everything that she could do to avoid extra expenses such as going to trial for temporary orders and pushing for a settelment so that we did not end up in cou...

Ms. Opfer is an outstanding attorney and became a good friend at a very difficult time. She was kind, compassionate, and I knew that she was doing everything legally that could be done. My divorce involved domestic violence and relocation with small children. I highly recommend her.
Thank you! We are very glad that we were able to provide you with the support and guidance you needed during a difficult time. We hope that you and your family will have a happy, safe and successful future! Sincerely, Opfer & Stowell P.C.
