Really unprofessional

I called Sheridan to ask for making an appointment for a consultation and ask about the consultation fee. But he wanted me to explain my case on the phone to see if it is within his expertise or not, which I did. The whole conversation lasted for 21 minutes and he did not really answer my questions b...ecause it seemed like he needed to search more about it. However, at the end of the conversation, he told me that he needs to charge me 75$ consultation fee!!! and he claimed that because he didn't know how long the conversation is going to be and he answered my questions, he should charge me! I have no problem with paying for consultations, but I think his act was really unprofessional! He should have told me that from the start not after me trying to rush to get to my point. He could have stopped me and just politely remind me that my case is (now I know it's not) in his expertise and he can have a one hour 75$ consultation with me to talk more about details. I ended up giving him my credit card info while driving but I truly regret that.

I don’t know who you are because you are hiding behind your anonymous posting, but I will take this opportunity to talk about my firm’s consultation style and policies. Many firms have an “inner sanctum” style. The attorney is protected by layers of secretaries, legal assistants, and associates. You can’t call him directly. You can’t walk in and see him without an appointment. You communicate largely through intermediaries, even if you have to pay for a consultation to find out whether you need a consultation! We don’t do it that way. I have no secretary. When my clients call, they talk to me. They can email me. They can text me. And it’s me they get. And when there is legal work to be done, it’s me that does it, not a paralegal. It’s the same for communicating with potential clients. It’s me you talk to. The upside to this style is that our clients love us and they get better advice, and we make fewer mistakes, and we win most of our cases. But the downside is that my time is stretched pretty thin. For that reason, when you call me there is going to be some triage. I’m not bringing clients into my office to consult over something if I’m not the best guy for it. The law is a vast ocean and we lawyers are very small boats. So if you call me for a family issue or a probate issue, I am going to help you find an expert in that area. If you call me for immigration court, I will find you a very good lawyer (I know many). If you call for a visa question, or an immigration appeal, or a motion to reopen, then I will set up a time to meet with you because I honestly don’t think you can find anybody who will do a better job. And sometimes people just need help now, not at 3:15 pm on Thursday in three weeks. But sometimes in the process of that phone triage your issues get resolved. I’m not stingy with advice! No inner sanctum here. If I have resolved all your issues and we’ve talked in depth and there is no reason to meet further or file any paperwork (which I expect is what happened with you--twenty minutes is a long phone call), I’m going to charge you a consultation fee. Giving advice is my livelihood. So here is some more (and this time it’s free!). Take obtaining legal counsel seriously. You tend to get what you pay for.

"I recommend Sheridan without reservation. Sheridan does things the right way - he's honest, diligent, and hard-working. Immigration law is very complex, especially in the world of immigration appeals. I have referred numerous happy clients to Sheridan for matters I feel he is much better at handling and all have been extremely happy with him. Sheridan is one of the best legal writers I know and he remains my go-to lawyer for any appellate work. I highly recommend Sheridan."

"Sheridan Green is a tireless advocate for alien rights who puts the client first. He is a knowledgeable, meticulous individual whose grasp of immigration law encompasses practice in the Supreme Court, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, Immigration Courts, and before Customs and Immigration Services. His landmark Supreme Court brief in Mata v. Lynch cemented an alien’s right to appeal a motion to reopen rejected by the BIA in a court of appeals. He has successfully appealed many cases to the Fifth Circuit on behalf of his clients. In addition to his work with motions and appeals, Mr. Green is well versed in the practical aspects of obtaining, sustaining, and modifying business, student, and family visas. He has assisted many students, athletes, and other special immigrants in their quests to obtain the necessary visas to pursue their goals. Mr. Green is accessible, and his level of professionalism and dedication to his work are beyond expectation."
