also known as Jim Dossey
Jim Dossey, MS, MBA, JD, CPA, focuses his practice on business law, tax, estate planning, probate and intellectual property. Jim is Board Certified in Estate Planning and Probate Law, Board Certified in Tax Law and a Certified Public Accountant. Jim is a Registered Patent Attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
In his work with business owners, Jim organizes start-ups and helps them choose the proper organizational form, whether it be a limited partnership (LP), limited liability company (LLC), or Corporation (including S-Corp). Once the business is operational, Jim helps entrepreneurs with a variety of legal needs, such as contract reviews and drafting, non-disclosure agreements (NDA), confidentiality agreements, employment contracts, liability waivers, succession planning, tax preparation and strategy, transactions, and mergers and acquisitions.
In his estate planning practice, Jim helps his clients establish custom estate plans for tax minimization and asset protection by utilizing the right tools for each client's special circumstances, whether the client just needs a simple Will, Power of Attorney, or Revocable Trust, or whether they need more complicated estate planning including Disclaimer Bypass Trusts, Credit Shelter Trusts, Irrevocable Life Insurance Trusts (ILIT), Charitable Trusts, Foundations, Supplemental Needs Trusts, Contingent Trusts, or Lifetime Descendent's Trusts.
As a Registered Patent Attorney, Jim advises clients on protection of intellectual property rights through patents, copyrights, and trademarks. Whether the client needs an assessment of their current IP portfolio through infringement opinions, patent searches, or trademark searches, or the client wants to take proactive steps to protect their IP through federal filings of patents (provisional and non-provisional), trademarks, and copyrights, Jim can help.
In addition to his JD from the South Texas College of Law, Jim has an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management, concentrating in corporate strategy and finance, a MS in Software Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin, and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin.
Prior to becoming a lawyer, Jim worked at Bank of America for five years as a participant in the bank's prestigious Technology MBA Leadership Development Rotational Program. During his 5 years at the bank, Jim led a team of over 150 bank employees to implement a $30MM technology infrastructure upgrade (mainframe and midrange hardware) and associated organizational change. Additionally, Jim worked on the bank's technology virtualization team, reducing the bank's infrastructure footprint by moving applications to an internal cloud computing environment. Before his role at Bank of America, Jim worked for five years at Quorum Business Solutions, a boutique oil and gas consulting firm in Houston, Texas, where he designed and programmed gas plant accounting software. Jim has programmed in numerous software programming languages over his career, including Java, C, C++, PL/SQL, FoxPro, Visual Basic, Cobol, Lightswitch, and HTML.
Outside of work at Withersworldwide, Jim is a legal advisor for the Legacy Foundation at the Ark Church in Conroe, Texas. Additionally, Jim is a founding Board Member on the MISD Education Foundation. Jim lives with his wife Jennifer and their three children in the April Sound Subdivision on Lake Conroe and enjoys spending his free time participating in endurance racing having completed his first Ironman competition in 2022.

Jim Dossey did a great job in getting our estate planning documents and family trust completed. I especially appreciated how he explained the alternatives so I could understand and make an informed decision. I also had kind of a unique request regarding setting up educational trust for my grandchild...
