More Focused on the Clock Than the Case
I scheduled a paid consultation with Mr. Golub for $725, which covered up to 90 minutes. I was fully aware that time beyond that would incur additional charges, which is exactly why I was carefully monitoring the clock throughout the meeting. Around the 70-minute mark, Mr. Golub noted we had 20 mi...
I am disappointed when any client is disappointed. However, these comments are not entirely accurate. My consultation fee agreement says, expressly, that "Andrew S. Golub charges a $725.00 flat rate fee for an initial consultation lasting up to 1.5 hours. This fee represents an approximately 30% discount off Mr. Golub's regular rate for a 1.5 hour block of time.... Any time beyond 1.5 hours will be charged at a rate of $685/hour." I will not get into specifics here about what was discussed during our meeting except to say that the comments about time are not accurate. Nor was there ever any assertion that, notwithstanding the consultation agreement, we had to stop at precisely 90 minutes. I ultimately charged this clilent for _less_ time than actually used, and nothing after the client realized that we had gone 20 minutes beyond the flat fee period. I regret the client's disappointment about my not having reviewed materials before our meeting, but it is not my practice to do so in advance of consults. Indeed, my form confirmation email asks clients to "bring" relevant materials with them to the meeting. While it doesn't say so expressly, implicit in that is that such materials will be reviewed during the meeting, not before. And even if they were reviewed before -- without context or the client available to answer questions about them -- that time would still count towards the total consultation time. In sum, I regret the client's disappointment. I certainly cannot change their feelings, but I believe that I bring transparency, professionalism, integrity, and respect for clients (and their difficulties) to every consultation meeting I conduct. With respect, Andrew S. Golub
