I scheduled a paid consultation with Mr. Golub for $725, which covered up to 90 minutes. I was fully aware that time beyond that would incur additional charges, which is exactly why I was carefully monitoring the clock throughout the meeting. Around the 70-minute mark, Mr. Golub noted we had 20 mi...nutes remaining. At no point did I consent to going over the 90-minute limit. In fact, I specifically brought up time again as we passed the 1.5-hour mark at 1.70 (because he kept talking and I tried to find a way to interrupt without being rude) to try to wrap things up. He acknowledged my concern and said he would “stop the meter”—but still continued talking, and then charged me for an extra 0.3 hours, bringing the total to $930.50. What shocked me most was what he wrote afterward: “You then said something about having only $725 on your card… But I see that you provided an AMEX card, not some kind of debit card, and so I have gone ahead and run the actual charge on the credit card you provided.” That felt incredibly inappropriate and exploitative. I had clearly explained my financial limit, and to override that because the card technically allowed it—not because I agreed to it—crossed a line. To make matters worse, Mr. Golub had not reviewed the detailed case summary I submitted in advance, which diminished the efficiency and value of the time spent. Compared to other attorneys I’ve consulted (some paid but few was less or completely fre—many of whom were MUCH better prepared and more empathetic—this experience felt transactional, disorganized, and tone-deaf. I also found it disappointing that he admitted he hadn’t reviewed my materials in advance, despite receiving a detailed key documents. For a paid consult at this rate, I expected more preparation and better communication. I ultimately chose another firm who was better aligned with my case and financial situation.
