When I had my military discharge physical in 1968, the doctor said I had a 10% hearing loss in my left ear. I really didn’t give his comments much weight then as I stayed in the reserves and earned my retirement. However, during that time period, my hearing continued to slowly deteriorate. I had n...ot kept a copy of my discharge physical; of course it was destroyed in the St. Louis warehouse fire that destroyed so many military records. I also had never used the VA system because of all the horror stories I had heard. A couple of years ago some friends, who had also served in the military and whose hearing was also a problem for them, and I started commiserating with each other about our hearing loss and wishing we had initiated action to obtain financial remuneration. However, we all felt that being unfamiliar with the maze of government regulations and trying to get some compensation at our age would be a long, tedious and likely losing battle.
