God awful

This guy was appointed to be a lawyer for a client a year ago in Sedgwick County Case No 23 CV 321. Just a few weeks ago the appeal was dismissed, by the District Court, because Wells didn't docket the case in the Kansas Court of Appeals. What makes matters worse is his client had a new evidence/inno...cence claim that required appellate review. The other review about him on this page is spot on. This guy was licensed back in the late 60's. Why he has not been forced to retire is beyond me. Now his client will have to file an ineffective assistance of appellate counsel complaint against him. And hopefully a complaint to the office of the Disciplinary Administrator. If I could give him zero stars I would. Garbage.

Terrible lawyer, horrible communicator

Mr Wells was court appointed to represent me for an appeal. His "Communicating with Client" rating is one of the worst I've ever seen - so bad that I had to contact him to introduce myself, almost 4 weeks after he was appointed to handle my appeal. His only response came a week later, insisting that ...he will only communicate via regular mail and wanting me to explain why I thought my case should be appealed. I mailed him a list of 11 reasons and waited for him to reply so we could discuss the case. And I waited... Waited... And waited, but he never did reply. Instead I found out several months later that he filed the appeal, but I no idea what grounds he based the appeal on and he never answered any of my letters asking about my case or about any developments. The only other communications I received from him were 2 notices that the court granted motions from him to postpone deadlines because he was too busy with other cases to meet court deadlines for my appeal. He totally failed to give me any chance to review what he filed as grounds for the appeal, never let me see what his final brief or closing arguments were, and never gave me any more info about it. He didn't even bother to inform me that the court ruled against me; I only found out almost 2 MONTHS after the ruling because I saw a note about it on my county's district court website, published on their public access site several weeks after they made their ruling. I only know what grounds he filed for the appeal because I read the Appellate Court's final ruling rejecting the appeal, and he entirely half-assed it to the point where one could be forgiven for believing he intentionally botched the case. Due to his negligence, he caused me to completely miss my chance to challenge their ruling and continue my fight for justice. And to this day, over 18 MONTHS after the speakers case ruled against me, he still hasn't bothered to to tell me they ruled against me. In other words, he not only botched my case, but he also ruined my last chance to continue Fighting to clear my name. I don't know if he's just a very terrible lawyer, or a "legal assassin" appointed to intentionally wreck me case, but either way I would recommend not wasting any time or money with this lawyer.

Avvo Rating

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education

  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
