Not In It For The Long Haul

I hired Ms. Longwell and Associates to represent me for my divorce starting in November of 2014. The "simple" divorce has dragged on for 2 1/2 years now...I was divorced in March of 2016. The reasons for the long delays were caused by my now ex- husbands lack of turning in any paperwork on time, even... those court ordered to do so. It has gone on and on with motion after motion being filed and going no where. I am still owed money by my ex husband. I was shocked to just find out that Ms. Longwell proceeded to file a motion to drop me as their client, stating that she could no longer help me due to a total lack of cooperation on my ex husband's part and my inability to work with her. It's not "in their best interests to continue". 2 1/2 years and all I asked for is what is owed me, nothing more and nothing less. My ex-husband was ordered by the judge to be at a hearing and didn't show up, nothing was done about it. That I put on the judge. Her associate, Mrs. Fitzpatrick, is the lawyer with the financial saavy as she did all of the financial paperwork. They would both show up in court when only one was needed, then charge me for both of their time; including just discussing my case between themselves would result in a fee. Ten minutes talking to the judge would result in being billed for an hour if they had to wait. You can't ask any questions if you don't understand something, either by phone or email without being billed. I have all the paperwork to support my claims. I now must find a new attorney to help me or attempt to get my ex husband to pay me on my own. I ask, is this fair?

My associates and I try very hard to do a good job for clients and leave them feeling as though they've come out of the proceedings with a good result for the price. One of the ways is that my younger associates do the leg work at about 60% of my rates and I supervise. This means that sometimes two of us need to appear in court or a deposition for full resources. This doesn't mean that either of us has "the financial savvy" but that we are trying to move tasks down the ladder to competent but less expensive talent. Despite the need to have two of us working together on some occasions, the result is many hours of savings at the difference in our rates. Also court appearances are seldom efficient. Whatever time we are required to be in court waiting for our case to be called is time we must bill. However, unlike some attorneys, we do not bill a minimum of an hour for court or 1/4 hour for a phone call or email. Overall we endeavor to give good value for our fees. Unfortunately, even with all of our abilities massed to serve our client's interests, we cannot make the court system efficient, force judges to make difficult rulings, get opposing attorneys to do the right thing, or compel spouses to do everything they have committed to within a reasonable time. This client's ex-husband and his attorney constantly dodged consequences from a judge who was shy of enforcing. We devoted more than 30 hours of uncompensated time in trying to gain compliance since the judgment but it was incredibly difficult to accomplish what we did, which was to escrow the home proceeds and have distribution authorized which compensated our client for payments she was forced to make while the home awaited sale. I don't blame the client for not being happy. I blame the system for failing to exact greater penalties for his not following the judgment. Her ex-husband didn't want to talk to her directly, so we believe that allowing the client to proceed on her own behalf will at this point be more effective for her than our continued efforts, given all the circumstances.

Marilyn got me through a long ordeal!!!

Marilyn came with high praise from my investigation. She lived up to that praise. She is not only incredibly knowledgeable about the law, but it is her vast experience with all the "players" (judges, consultants, experts, legal colleagues) that gives her an edge above others. If you are looking fo...r a "shark," then you won't want Marilyn. That is not to say she is not aggressive. She takes full advantage of every nook and cranny of the law but she is not abusive in so doing. More than once did she talk me off the ledge and our case is now over to my satisfaction.

Very Professional, Compassionate, & Ethical Lawyers

Marilyn and Ebony were very professional in how they approached my case. They did not treat me like my case was like every other case they have dealt with. And above all, they treated the case honestly and ethically, never telling me things just because that was what I wanted to hear, rather they wer...e honest and forthright.

Best Divorce Lawyer in Chicago

I hired Marilyn in the summer 2017 to represent me in the final stage of my divorce. My ex was refusing to participate in the process, show up at court., after I filed two years ago. Marilyn was able to quickly secure a trial date which sped things up. We were able to hammer out a fair deal for all... sides with unique strategies my previous attorney never mentioned (his rate was lower but less experienced). Marilyn is old school, she likes to meet face to face to spitball ideas, and it works. You really feel like your case has her full attention and personal touch. Her hourly rates were a bit steep compared to other attorneys, but you are buying her experience and reputation, which means all the difference in the world when you reach that final negotiation crossroad that every divorce has. In the end, I am 100% certain I saved money by hiring her firm. First, the total bill ends up lower when she uses her skills to bring the case to the end. Second, the savings in maintenance and child support over 15 years justified the premium rate she charges. In other words, I recommend hiring the best and not shopping for best rates. I was lucky to have found Marilyn and her super smart associate Ebony and now I can move on to the next stage of my life. I have authorized her to use my name as a reference should any prospects have questions. Happily divorced!

Custody Case

As soon as I met Marilyn, I knew that I needed to have her as my attorney. Marilyn and Aurelija have represented me the past four years and I am very fortunate that they stayed by my side throughout a sticky case. They were both very knowledgeable, professional, and quick to respond to any question o...r concern I had. I would definitely hire her again and again!
