Serious Concerns About GAL Impartiality and Proces

She was appointed as the Guardian ad Litem (GAL) in my case, and my experience with her was extremely disappointing. In my view, she did not conduct a thorough or impartial investigation. She did not contact the individuals I listed on my GAL intake sheet, and communication with both me and my attorn...ey was limited and very inconsistent throughout the case. At one point, a meeting was scheduled with her. Prior to that meeting, I provided extensive documentation via email, including Our Family Wizard messages, videos, and audio recordings relevant to the case. On the day of the scheduled meeting, she did not attend and did not respond to repeated phone calls, emails, or messages during or after the meeting time. Several hours later, her office contacted me to reschedule. Throughout the case, she advised both parties that knowingly false reports to DCFS would result in loss of parenting time. Despite this, when the other party later made what I believe to have been a false DCFS report against me during the divorce proceedings, she stated that she conducted an investigation. Ultimately, she chose not to bill either party for approximately $6,000 in work, explaining that this was to offset a prior overbilling. This raised concerns for me regarding both the handling of fees and the scope of the investigation into the DCFS allegations. Additionally, no substantive changes were made to the parenting order as a result of this process, other than requiring our child to attend counseling, with the other parent responsible for scheduling and transportation. Based on my experience, I believe there were significant issues related to communication, thoroughness, and impartiality. I filed a complaint with the ARDC as a result. I would encourage others to exercise caution and conduct careful due diligence when selecting Emily Rapp as a GAL.

Loves billable hours

I regret hiring Emily as my attorney due to the fact that she has a small law firm with high overhead and therefore needs to bill a lot of hours. I hired Emily because I thought she was compassionate and seemed to be understanding about my divorce situation. I was married to a covert narcissist for a...bout 20 years and just wanted out asking for only half of my portion of the marital assets whatever they were because I had no idea. After two years and paying her $40,000 she dropped me because I could not pay and would not pay her the additional $10,000 trial retainer fee that she required before continuing to work on my case. By the way there were no children involved in the case. I felt that she took advantage of me and my situation by playing the games that attorneys do to make money by billing more hours and making it look like they are doing you a favor. My second divorce attorney was a no BS person, worked at a larger law firm (not as much overhead), and got the job done in a reasonable amount of time and had fair billable hours.

Post divorce proceedings

Emily handled my maintenance negotiation after my original divorce decree didn’t have an end date. Emily and her office staff kept me up on all proceedings and we came to an agreed order in a timely fashion.

THE BEST!!!

Emily is an incredible lawyer... I trust her completely. She has a very knowledgable and relaxed vibe and she helped me immensely with my divorce. It was a fast, smooth process start to finish and she was a vital contributor to it's success. I recommend her BIG TIME!!! She clearly knows what she...'s doing and I felt very comforted by her representation.

Avvo Rating

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
