$50K and lost jurisdictional battle due to early filing

I hired Michael P. Mazza LLC to sue a company in Florida for copyright infringement. I assumed we had jurisdiction but we didn’t. Michael didn’t tell me, which he had a fiduciary duty to do so. In the first 3 months, he ran the legal costs up to $74,600 but he discounted the bill closer to $50k once ...I started complaining that he had a duty to tell me about jurisdiction. I had no evidence whatsoever that the defendant did any business in my state of Illinois: I would have sued in Florida if my lawyer told me about the issue as he was obligated under his fiduciary duty. That’s $50,000 in 3 months to lose a battle he had no chance of winning. After he filed the paperwork, he told me to keep my fingers crossed. Michael found one photo that showed the defendant did business in Illinois but the judge said that one photo wasn’t enough for jurisdiction and a lawyer ought to knows that. I actually did end up finding a Google Adwords campaign that was enough for jurisdiction but since Michael filed the lawsuit before having that evidence, the Judge said that we couldn’t use it. Keep in mind that Michael quoted me $5-6k to file the lawsuit and his first bill comes in at $15k.

Avvo Rating

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
