Aggressive and intelligent attorney

John Shoemaker is an aggressive and intelligent attorney. I've worked with him on a number of landlord tenant cases. He's practices his civil litigation skills effectively in both state and federal courts. He understands the court system very well.

The Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the tenants. The case will now proceed toward class certification and trial.

Stacey Marable, et al. v. City of Minneapolis, Minneapolis Public Housing Authority, et al.

Obtained Court of Appeals' decision that for first time provides public housing tenants with same city services as private tenants have enjoyed for decades. City and Public Housing settled with Marable family which was approved by the court.

Lowry et al. v. City of Minneapolis and Minneapolis Public Housing Authority

The case is on appeal before the Minnesota Court of Appeals.

Ellis v. City of Minneapolis

Successfully opposed City's motion for judgment. On City's appeal, successfully argued before the Minnesota Court of Appeals resulting in a decision affirming the denial of judgment for the City.

River Services, Inc. v. Therma Spray, Inc.

The parties participated in arbitration of their claims before the American Arbitration Association.

Following Supreme Court's decision in Texas Dept. of Housing v. Inclusive Communities, 6/15, and elevation of standard of proof for housing providers claiming government policies were violating civil rights laws, complaint was voluntarily dismissed.

Raven Financial, LLC v. Governor Mark Dayton, Metropolitan Council, Minnesota Housing Finance Agency and the State of Minnesota

HUD delayed the processing of the Complaint, and took no action to address the systemic and long-continuing regulatory abuses impacting affordable rental housing providers and their tenants.

Raven Financial v. City of Saint Paul

HUD complaint filed in Chicago, with massive delay by federal officials, and refusal to truly investigate the claims that City code enforcement action was disparately impacting people of color.

Brown v. Auto-Owners Insurance Company

Dispute successfully resolved through arbitration.

Bue Vue vs City of Saint Paul

Following a weekend filing of a complaint to the Chicago office of HUD, and local press coverage, landlord client was able to work with veteran code officials to keep family in home and finish the minimal code repairs necessary.

Rock of Ages Missionary Baptist Church, et al. v. City of Saint Paul

Prepared disparate impact, fair housing complaint with HUD. Pursued HUD over extended period urging it to take enforcement action on complaint of municipal regulatory abuse. HUD effectively buried the complaint without honest investigation.

Folger, et al. v. City of Minneapolis, U.S. Federal District Court

Defeated City motion to dismiss action and case was settled.

In re: Quick Eagle Transport, Inc.

The Bankruptcy Court dismissed the bankruptcy petition and prohibited the debor from further filings for 180 days.

Alan Haehner, et al. v. Robert Dufresne, Capture LLC, Northwestern Mutual, et al.

Settled before trial

Gallagher, Steinhauser and Harrial, et al. v. Magner, City of Saint Paul, et al.

The United States Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals reversed the district court and ordered claims to jury trial; U.S. Supreme Court subsequently changed the law in 2015; in 2017 Plaintiffs withdrew their claims.

Bee Vue, et al. v. City of Saint Paul

The Minnesota Court of Appeals overturned the City of Saint Paul's decision to demolish the building and Vue was then able to provide affordable rental housing to people in need in the community.
