After 20 years of committed support and having finally paid off all lingering debts (guess who's), my wife said she needed her independence. She asked for a divorce, moved out, and hired a "Best of Milwaukee” lawyer. No one who gets married ever intends on getting divorced. I know that I certainly was one of those that thought, "this is going to last forever."
