I love being a family law attorney and am dedicated to serving and empowering my clients. My practice includes nearly all aspects of family law.  Honored to serve as Chair Elect for the Family Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan, I currently Chair the Ad Hoc Committee on Shared Parenting Time and Co-Chair Member Education and Public Relations Committee. I am a member of the Dedicated Family Court and Legislation Committees. I am a Board Member of the Women Lawyer's Association of Michigan and was honored to serve on the State Court Administrator's Advisory Committee updating the Friend of the Court Bureau's Parenting Time Guidelines, used statewide. My State Bar service has included time on the former Practice Management Committee. I maintain an active collaborative divorce practice in the State and serve as officer to Up North Collaborative Divorce Practice Group. More recently I served on the Collaborative Practice Institute of Michigan board. I value the time I spent as founding Chair of the Traverse Bay Children's Advocacy Center (TBCAC) , working with that organization to change how we respond to children and their families where sexual or physical abuse is suspected. My hobbies time spent as a former board member of the Traverse City Track Club (TCTC) that holds the Bay Shore Marathon, and sponsors Girls on the Run among other area races. My interest in children and families inspired my participation on the original board of the Great Lakes Children's Museum which has matured to be a very successful organization since those early days. I have been honored with two Governor appointments to the Children's Trust Fund, a State Board, providing funding to child abuse prevention services throughout the State of Michigan.

EDRO justice
I will forever be grateful to Shelley for taking on my unbelievably skewed EDRO in August 2015. Since my surreal judgment of divorce in 2009...a result of ex-family ties with the in Emmet County Court, I desperately sought counsel from several attorney consultations throughout Michigan without success. Thankfully Shelley acccepted my journey for justice with positivity and tenacity, along with Ryan Hulst ending in December 2019 with an agreeable outcome. I wish I could turn back time, have Shelley as my initial counsel for a "collaborative divorce", rather than the experience I endured. I highly recommend Wilson-Kester for a fair, outstanding, and compassionate experience!

Exceptional Lawyer for a Primary Caretaker Man with Kids whose ex-wife was trying to limit visitation options.
You can do no better than with Shelley Kester. She was incredibly diligent, detailed, and her examination and cross examination was simply spot on. She was able to uncover the falsehoods and bring to light the truths. All of my ex-wifes "Witnesses" essentially ended up being my witnesses and strengthening my case. This was all due to the incredible thoroughness of Ms. Kester and the way she builds her case to present to the Judge or Referee. Meticulous. Textbook. None of the witnesses could know where any line of questioning was going and so they all ended up being unprepared for what they were supposed to say and ended up speaking the truth about who I am as a dad. They ended up shoring up my position and revealing the twisting and manipulation of reality that had been going on while old friends were turned into people who now despised me. Above everything, Shelley Kester is about getting down to the truth. Backround: Our tale of family destruction is not new although it was a bit unilateral and was a surprise to everyone not know as my ex-wife. In the end people deserve to be happy in life and I don't find fault with wanting a new start. But such new starts are better when there is some level of discussion and things are less abrupt. Planning would have been better. Our court case however is a very challenging one and maybe a bit novel. My ex-wife and I had a signed and notarized agreement which allowed the kids(3) to decide where they wished to live. Our kids have always had a lot of autonomy and their own agency. Everything worked well throughout the first year after the divorce, but all of my kids were deciding to spend more time with me. I had always been the primary caretake since they were infants, and with my ex-wife primarily in charge post divorce, they simply were missing the day to day parenting I have always provided. My ex-wife simply has always had other priorities and that worked well when we were together. However, while I was recovering from the abrupt one-sided dissolution of our family, my ex-wife ended up with the most custody of our kids. As time went on my kids began to make choices about where they wished to live. First my eldest child decided to move where I was. But when the second child decided to move as well and the third was contemplating spending more time at my house, my ex-wife decided to shut that down and got an interim court decision blocking my kids from coming to freely stay with me as had been the previous understanding. They ended up being sequestered at her house the majority of the time with simple visitation 3 times a year. That is not what any of them wanted, especially after the lawsuit and initial decision was made, but they were stuck. Obviously, this began a year and 1/2 dispute as my ex-wife decided to drag things into the court rather than use the existing mechanism of arbitration provided by our signed agreement. So hell was unleashed unilaterally upon both sides of our family once more. And the lives of the kids became a purgatory of uncertainty and perpetual stress. Contrary to being a normal thing as my ex-wife framed the court case to our children, Court cases are a sign of gross dysfunction. Our case was incredibly destructive, hostile, and rampaged over both sides of our family mercilessly for a year and 1/2. So I needed an amazing lawyer and an amazing team. I was so so so lucky to have found Ms. Kester et. al. A competent legal team became like family for me. My case is extraordinarily different in the sense that I am a man who is fighting the mother of my kids for them to have more right to see me. But what makes the extra difficult is that I also live in an entirely different state. Yet even with such a normally heavy lift, we were able to prevail in the case. Truly, you can do no better to get at the truth and bring back balance in your family than by working with Ms. Kester and her team.

Difficult Divorce
I recently went through an incredibly difficult divorce, and I am pleased to say that Wilson Kester provided invaluable assistance throughout the entire process. I cannot speak highly enough of their professionalism, expertise, and dedication to achieving the best possible outcome for their clients. My ex husband made the process incredibly difficult to say the least. My divorce involved obtaining a PPO, the sale of a home out of state and intense disputes over assets and child custody matters. Shelley demonstrated exceptional attention to detail. Her strategic approach and ability to anticipate potential challenges proved invaluable in achieving a favorable outcome. Shelley made me feel very protected and put my anxieties at ease. Not only was my attorney great but the entire team at Wilson Kester was compassionate and supportive throughout the divorce process. Specifically my paralegal Krista who whenever I had questions, concerns, or needed updates on the progress of my case, consistently responded quickly and provided me with the information I needed. I am immensely grateful for their guidance, and I can confidently say that they made a profound difference in the outcome of my case.

Adoption
I can not say enough things about Shelley Kester and all the ladies that work with her. Not only are they extremely professional, thorough and knowledgeable but mostly they carry a personal relationship with you. They do not make you feel like it is an attorney client relationship. They do not give a sense of intimidation. You can ask them anything! To me that was so important as we were preparing for something that was so dear to my husband and I, a step parent adoption! It brings tears to my eyes just writing about the ladies because the help and assistance they gave to our family meant the absolute world to us and we will forever be thankful for them!

Child custody/parenting time
Shelley Kester and her experienced staff worked quickly and efficiently to set realistic goals and expectations in the best interests of my daughter and I. Along the way, many obstacles and emotions presented that were immediately addressed in a professional and confident matter. The entire staff at Wilson&Kester were a pleasure to work with even in the most challenging of situations. Early on, Shelley said to me "you are a good man and father and I have your back". That is exactly what happened over the following 2 months, resulting in a desirable outcome. I will be forever grateful for the services provided! Tim

Personable and caring
Dear Shelley, I wanted to thank you for all your hard work that you have done for me over the past several months during my very difficult divorce. I knew during our first telephone conference that you were the attorney that I wanted representing me. You listened to my situation as I knew it at that time. You were personable and caring with your approach to me and my situation. You were firm with your advice and gave direction in my moment of chaos. You were quick to answer any questions that I had along the way. This was of great comfort to me, as I was not unnecessarily worrying about things for days. Your written and oral arguments during my proceedings were impressive to say the least. You have a no-nonsense and logical way of presenting the facts that make it very difficult for the opposing party to argue against. There is a pleasant, “bulldog”-attitude with your approach to a case that anyone would want from his/her attorney. You have a great and caring staff. Your paralegal, Jennifer, was wonderful to work with. She was always warm and pleasant during our communications. She seemed to know the details of my case and was quick to get any answers to my questions that I had along the way. She was also punctual with keeping the information coming into her for my case. That was appreciated in my hectic life. Hopefully, I will never need your services, again. However, if I have any friends or family members in need of legal representation in a family law situation, I will not hesitate to give them your name to represent them during their difficult time. Wishing you and your staff the best. Thank you.

Firecracker :)
Oh Mrs. Kester! She is truly a ball of Fire. Her team is amazing, attentive, caring, friendly, and extremely helpful. We walked into a Custody Battle not knowing what the future could turn out to be. We knew what we wanted, that what is. Shelley achieved those wants 100%. She communicates so extremely well. Calls, texts, emails, always keep us in the loop, always giving her best legal advice. Shelley never held back! You say jump, she says how high! She worked late nights, and weekends on this case! She grinds, and grinds. Seeing her in Trial..... let me just say it blew our mind. She’s organized, prepared, focus, and a totally different attorney than over the phone or in person. If I could use one word to describe her, it would be “Fierce”. Her paralegals are one of a kind! Jennifer, Jodi, Ann we can’t thank you ladies enough! Shelley is so blessed to have wonderful women on her side. After 11 months of litigation, stress, tears, and laughter. We won Primary Custody! Shelley turned our home in “Peace”. No more worries. No more sleepless nights. If you need a great attorney, please seek Wilson Kester. I can’t say it enough, she is truly an amazing attorney. Not to mention, she educated us so extremely well. You Mrs.Kester are a winner!

Excellent and thorough work
Shelley was hired by us to be the attorney for our daughter's divorce and drawn out property settlement. She was very thorough and communicated with us evenings, weekends and even on a holiday, whenever the need was there. Shelley explained issues to us and our daughter so we understood what was going on during the whole process. The entire office was welcoming and informative any time we had concerns or questions. Shelley also included us in decision making and freely kicked ideas back and forth with us, considering our thoughts. We would not hesitate at all to include Shelley and her office in future legal matters.

Simply the Best
I hired Shelley to represent me during the middle of a post-divorce child custody case against a narcissist that felt that our children were his property and I was desperate to protect them from his psychological, emotional, and sometimes physical abuse. Before I hired Shelley, I felt discouraged and almost entirely hopeless. After Shelley and Ryan began working on my custody and parenting time case, I felt empowered and protected. They went above and beyond at every turn with such compassion, encouragement, professionalism, and commitment. I honestly wouldn't recommend any other firm for family needs. Their expertise, dedication, and attention to every detail are simply unmatched. I not only gained confidence and hope, I felt like I gained life-long friends. Thanks to Shelley and her outstanding team, my 4-year battle is over and for the first time ever, I know my children and I are safe and able to breathe deeply.

Competent Attorneys and Wonderful Firm
Shelley and Ryan represented me in a Separate Maintenance Agreement (legal separation) after a 37 year marriage to a not-so-responsible and not-so-honest spouse who was actually caught lying on his court paperwork. Trust me when I say they know how to deal with less than simple and straightforward cases. I am so grateful that my local attorney interviewed firms in MI and selected Wilson Kester based on his opinion of their skill level, reputation, personalities, compassion and willingness to go to bat for me. I was impressed from the moment we had our first telephone call. Shelley and Ryan were very responsive to all of my emails and questions and were like a guiding light. They managed my expectations realistically, were creative in ways to work around roadblocks and always kept me up to speed as if I was right there in Traverse City instead of 5 states away. I could not have managed without them and I highly recommend them to you if you are looking for competent, honest, hardworking, responsive and personable attorneys who make you feel like you are their only client.

A turning point in my case
I came to the Wilson Kester law firm 1.5 years into my case. It was moving backwards quickly and I didn’t believe it could be salvaged. I just knew that my young son deserved for me to find the best legal team I could. My case was long, drawn out and complicated, but the legal professionals at this amazing firm waded through the mountains of paperwork and unnecessary information. They mined the gems of information that would serve as a foundation to breathe new life into a case I thought was all but lost. Shelley has flawlessly represented me with poise, ethics and grace. She has helped me to choose my battles, and has left everything on the floor when representing me both in and outside the courtroom. Her compassion and skill are the reason my case has been revived. I will be forever grateful, long after the case is done, for the way she has fought to give me a voice to help my son. She brings with her a fire fueled by her passion for justice and tempered by her great respect for the legal system and the intricacies it requires. You will never regret your decision to bring this firm into your case.

Expert Family Law Representation
Hard to put this into a brief review. I have had a now 8 year battle with a narcissistic, manipulative abusive ex-husband. I initially hired Shelley to represent me for a post - divorce child custody trial. I hired her because I couldn’t take any chances when it came to the well-being of my children and I knew of her reputation from the personal experiences of some of her prior clients who were my friends/acquaintances. Although I was generally happy with my prior attorney, I knew that Shelley specialized in family law, and felt that I needed the best representation that I could find- and that was what I got. After a successful custody trial she has continued to represent me through a multitude of court proceedings including personal protection orders, parenting time issues, passports, insurance disputes and on and on. At every turn she has been well-prepared, thorough and professional. She always took the time to understand the details of my case and represented my interests effectively. She holds herself to the highest standards of integrity and is well respected by the legal community. This has been a very financially costly road for me, but I will hire her again if I need to and wouldn’t trust anyone else to represent me. You definitely get what you pay for when it comes to legal representation.

I am so happy that I had Shelley and her team to advocate for me when I was going through the toughest part of my life. Not only was everyone in that office kind, caring and understanding, they were ON TOP OF IT! They left no stone unturned and no question unanswered. I am so happy with my experience.

.....Like Family......
I retained Shelley for what I thought would be an "easy" divorce process. It turned out to be a marathon of negotiations with a rigid ex-spouse that lasted for nearly 17-months. Shelley and her team treated me and my concerns like my own family. They listened, they advised and they cared throughout the entire process. I felt Shelley was knowledgeable in things that I didn't know to be concerned about and she covered those things with me in detail. She took the necessary time to make sure I understood each step of the process and I never felt rushed to understand or agree with her recommendations. She had a wonderful sense of humor at just the right times that alleviated "the elephant in the room" but also showed empathy and concern like it was her own. Thank you team Kester! Keep representing your clients with the same quality care!
