In fact, if you ask attorney Steven Shelton why he entered law school, and he’ll probably tell you this: “When I needed an attorney, nobody wanted to talk to me because I wasn’t rolling in cash, and the same thing was happening to my friends.” Shelton decided to do something about it and enrolled in the nation’s largest law school, Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, Michigan, where he attended class full-time while working full-time. Shelton quickly earned a reputation as a force in both the classroom and the courtroom, graduating in the top ten in his class and winning several awards for courtroom advocacy.
Now in private practice, Shelton has never forgotten the reason he started law school in the first place and has dedicated his professional life to ensuring that justice is available for everyone, and not just the wealthy. “My goal is to provide top-notch legal assistance to the people who need it most,” he said. “That’s why I work hard to minimize costs for my clients, why I am active in providing pro bono services, and why I jump at the chance to do court-appointed criminal defense work. I don’t live in a big mansion. I don’t drive a big fancy car. I don’t think you’d want to pay for them. The law is there to protect everyone; you shouldn’t have to be a lawyer to afford a lawyer.
