I am a family law attorney with more than 35 years of experience representing clients in Ohio divorce, dissolution, child custody, spousal support, and the division of complex marital assets in Summit County and the Greater Akron area. I practice at Skidmore & Associates, a multi-generational Akron law firm founded by my father, the late attorney Archie W. Skidmore, who practiced law for nearly 70 years and received the Akron Bar Association’s Distinguished Professionalism Award.
My brothers and I were born and raised in Akron. We each left for college and graduate school, but all returned home to practice law in the city that shaped us. I have devoted my career to the Summit County Domestic Relations Court system, representing clients in every stage of Ohio family law—from temporary orders and complex support issues to trials, modifications, and post-decree enforcement.
My Background and Approach
I began practicing law in 1989. Over the decades, I have represented clients in the full spectrum of family law matters, including:
divorce and dissolution
child custody and shared parenting plans
spousal support and income analysis
division of businesses and professional practices
executive compensation, stock options, and RSUs
division of retirement accounts (QDROs and DOPOs)
marital home valuation and property division
temporary orders and emergency relief
post-decree enforcement and parenting time disputes
Summit County specific domestic relations procedures
My background before focusing exclusively on family law included representing real estate developers, commercial creditors, condominium associations, lenders, and business owners. This experience gives me a unique skill set for high-asset divorces, property disputes, and financial analysis. I bring that same level of discipline, strategy, and preparation to every divorce matter I handle in Akron.
My professional philosophy is simple: identify legal problems, analyze them carefully, and solve them with integrity and purpose. Family law cases are highly personal, but they require clear thinking, strong advocacy, and respect for the long-term stability of the family—especially when children are involved.
Guiding Clients Through a Difficult Transition
Divorce is one of the hardest experiences a person may face. My role is to provide clarity, direction, and stability when everything feels uncertain. In Summit County Domestic Relations Court, outcomes are shaped by careful preparation, credible presentation of financial information, and a grounded understanding of local expectations.
I strongly believe that while a marriage may end, the parental bond must remain intact. Parents will continue to see one another at their children's future milestones—graduations, weddings, grandchildren, and family events. Conduct during the divorce affects these future relationships, and I encourage clients to make decisions that protect their long-term well-being and family health.
A New Beginning
When reconciliation is no longer possible, divorce becomes an opportunity for renewal. It allows a spouse to rediscover the individuality, independence, and personal identity they may have set aside during the marriage. I encourage clients to focus on rebuilding—not resentment. Anger distorts judgment, prolongs litigation, and makes it harder to move forward.
A clear mind leads to better decisions about custody, support, property, and financial stability. Clients who embrace the “new beginning” mindset often emerge stronger, more confident, and better positioned for the next chapter of their life.
What Clients Can Expect When Working With Me
1. A Thorough, Analytical Approach
I bring a detail-oriented, methodical approach to every case. Financial documents, timelines, asset valuations, retirement accounts, and support calculations are handled with precision. Summit County’s Domestic Relations Court expects thorough preparation—and that is what I deliver.
2. Clear Guidance Through Each Phase of the Case
From temporary orders to discovery, negotiations, trial preparation, and post-decree issues, I explain every step so clients know what to expect. Divorce is unfamiliar territory for most people; clarity reduces fear.
3. Respectful, Steady Representation
My goal is to protect clients without escalating conflict unnecessarily. When settlement is possible, we pursue it responsibly. When litigation is necessary, I am fully prepared.
4. Straightforward Communication
Clients receive honest assessments, grounded expectations, and practical advice—not unrealistic promises.
5. A Focus on Long-Term Family Stability
Whether the issue involves support, the marital home, parenting time, school placement, or financial planning, decisions are made with the future in mind—not just the moment.
6. A Multi-Generational Legal Legacy Behind the Work
My practice is shaped by the values of my father, who practiced law in Akron for nearly seven decades: integrity, preparedness, and professionalism. Those principles guide how I represent every client today.
