Best attorney I've ever known

Mr. Gerling is the consummate professional. I came to him when I was at my lowest point and he not only helped me on a professional level, but he really took the time to listen to me and in finally feeling *heard*, I felt significantly less stressed about the entire matter. My outcome was incredible ...and better than I could have possibly hoped for. I could not recommend Mr. Gerling more.

Not happy with overall experience with Doucet

In my initial consultation with Troy, he gave me good indications that my case was strong, simple and straightforward. Based on the information he provided and those I read on his website, I was under the impression that his firm has previously handled cases similar to mine. I felt confident that my ...case would not be a novel undertaking for the firm. Once I signed the fee agreement, I never once again met or spoke with Troy. At the start of my case, I found out that the attorney assigned to me had quit and I was told the new person handling my case would be “J” (name withheld), who I later found out was a law clerk (but billed as attorney, even though he was licensed in another state at that time), and his boss, Andew Gerling, who had to sign off on everything. Maybe that’s why my first two billing statements show an inordinate amount of time (about 24+ hours) spent on the (enumerated) complaint filed with the court, not to mention the repeated review or meeting with senior or supervising attorneys regarding my case. I communicated mostly with “J” throughout my case, who was nice and personable, and I spoke with Andrew twice, mostly about billing issues and my concern that I would not fully recover my loss because of the mounting legal expenses. First call, he was very reassuring. Second time, he went back on his assurances as I understood them and was pretty rude, in my opinion. In the end, the total legal bill was about 70% of the settlement award. After negotiating with the firm, they discounted their fees so I would get 40%. I think it is disingenuous to say that I got 100% of the award just because the settlement amount was split into two payments: one check was made out to me and the other was paid to Troy’s firm. I understand that law firms have to earn money. There are fees associated with all the services they provide. I do not begrudge them that and they did work on my case. However, I feel like they could have accomplished the work needed with less hours. And it really didn’t reassure me when I saw the opposing counsel had even questioned the reasonableness of their fees in their court filings. Maybe this was just a trial tactic from the other side, but it reinforced my concerns. Overall, it was a very stressful experience for me to worry constantly whether I would be worse off than when I started and I felt strongly enough to leave this review based on my actual experience, how I felt I was treated, and what I know to be true for my case.

Chris, I'm sorry to hear you had a poor experience with our firm. These consumer cases are a bit different from "traditional" lawsuits. Most people think about lawyers taking a percentage of an overall award (typically 1/3 of the recovery), known as a contingency case. Cases under Ohio's Consumer Protection statute have whats known as a "fee shifting" provision. This means that the other side is required to pay the legal fees in addition to money to the client. This is why there are two checks issued at the end of the case. It also can have a wide array of results. For example, a case could settle quickly with little legal work resulting in a small amount of money for legal fees and a large amount of money for the client, and vice versa. It seems like we had a breakdown in effectively communicating how these cases work. I have discussed with all of our lawyers the importance of taking as much time as necessary with clients so they fully understand how these cases work. I know when someone has to hire a lawyer it is typically a foreign and stressful situation. We strive to answer all our clients questions and give them peace of mind knowing we are in their corner. Again, I apologize for any confusion on your case. I appreciate your feedback and wish you the best going forward.

Great firm, dependable attorneys

I hired this firm a year ago to handle a tough situation. Troy Doucet was honest upfront and very knowledgeable about the laws related to my case. He confidently told me in an initial meeting that they could help and indeed they did. All the attorneys I dealt with were informative respectful and unde...rstanding. Would definitely recommend this firm to others.

Great attorney and firm!

I was in a very bad position with a VERY uncooperative bank that I had a loan with. Due to a recent divorce it was crucial that I resolved this issue. Andrew and his firm was very attentive and actually took the time (and interest) to listen to me and the situation. They were very polite and timel...y in all of their responses to my many questions. I can't thank Andrew and Doucet and Associates enough for their professionalism and kindness throughout this nightmare. I am pleased to say everything has been resolved thanks to Andrew
