About Michael

Learn Michael’s areas of practice.

After graduating from Brandon High School, Reed attended the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) on scholarship studying political science with an emphasis in criminal justice programs.  Initially, he planned to join either the FBI and/or the United States Marine Corps.  These plans changed when he met his to-be wife, the former Dee Dee Burt, and was offered another generous scholarship to continue his studies at the University of Mississippi School of Law.

While in law school Reed made good grades and graduated at the top of his class.  By this time he had both a wife and son to support so God’s blessings were particularly bountiful when he was offered a good job with a reputable insurance defense law firm which had an office in Oxford, a wonderful place to live.

After several years, Reed joined his supervising attorneys in forming what is today Freeland Martz, PLLC.   During this period Reed and his wife had more children and adopted two others. Reed and Dee Dee have five children (Gabriel, Margaret, Jonathan, Anna, and Claire), all of whom are homeschooled by a mother with the patience of a saint.  They also have a beloved standard poodle, Ollie, and only half-jokingly question the need for any other breed.

In his free time Reed enjoys distance running and outdoor sports including camping, hunting, and shooting.  Due to his passion and years of study Reed is regarded by many to be the foremost expert on Mississippi gun rights and 2nd Amendment issues.  He is actively involved in several community and faith-based organizations.  Reed and his family are members of Grace Bible Church of Oxford.

Gun laws
Reed presented information regarding gun laws. He presented the information in a very clear and understandable way. He provided real life situations and was able to answer all of our questions. He spoke for 1 1/2 hours and he was so interesting the time flew by. It was obvious that he was very knowledgeable and an expert in the area of gun laws. I hope our club invites him back again.

Very knowledgeable
Mr Martz spoke at the local chapter of The Well Armed Woman recently on state and federal gun laws and how they apply in everyday situations. He was extremely knowledgeable and patient with any questions we had. I hope to have the opportunity to hear him again. I highly recommend him.

Highly Recommend
Reed Martz recently assisted me with a real estate matter. From the initial consultation and throughout his representation, I appreciated Reed’s direct and low key demeanor and strategic approach to resolving the matter efficiently and expeditiously. He wisely helped me get to the heart of the matter quickly and without any grandstanding, and he helped lead me to a successful resolution very quickly. Reed is the essence of a lawyer as a “counselor” who strives to help his clients arrive at the best resolution for them as quickly as possible and without charging a lot of unnecessary legal fees. I highly recommend Reed.

Exemplary and professional
Reed is very professional and honest. He told me everything that could happen , good or bad. He never promissed me an outcome in my case. Only that he would do the best he could. And his best was impressive. He was successfully in getting me awarded a certificate of rehabilitation. I called other lawyers before him but i felt comfortable with Reed from the start.

Adverse Employer Action...
Mr. Martz negotiated a favorable outcome to my employer's unjustified administrative action against me which would have affected my retirement benefits.

Expertise and Professionalism
Reid Martz represents both neighborhood associations of which we are members, Wellsgate and Stonebridge. Having worked with Mr. Martz several times relating to association matters and being impressed with his expertise and professionalism, my wife and I chose to have Mr. Martz to work with us in revising and updating our wills. We could not be more pleased with the thoroughness and exactness with which he assisted us. We recommend Mr. Martz with enthusiasm because of his knowledge of law, his polite and personable demeanor, his efficiency, and his honesty.

Top attorney in the State of Mississippi
For the past four years, I have had the pleasure of working with Freeland Martz, PLLC. Mr. Reed Martz is in my opinion the authority in legal matters concerning firearm laws both state and federal. In addition to his knowledge in these matters, he is well versed in all aspects of civil litigation. I have found his staff and all the attorneys at Freeland Martz to be top notch in the legal profession. I would highly recommend discussing your case with this firm.

A GUN OWNER'S LAWYER
Reed Martz has exemplified himself with top-of-the-line firearms training and excelled in each course. His knowledge and expertise in the law including the Second Amendment is second to none. He has represented me not once but three times and prevailed in all three cases holding city and county officials accountable for our gun rights. I have 34 years in law enforcement, worked several years for the Attorney General around scores of lawyers every day. I never worked with one as knowledgeable of gun rights. He is not one of those lawyers who gets your signature on a contract and has his secretary run interference for him when you call. He always answers my calls on the first ring and frequently corresponds with me even when he is not representing me. He publishes materials advantageous to people who carry firearms and provides them free of charge. He is prompt, professional, reasonable and gets results.

Reed Martz has been my attorney since 2015
Reed Martz has represented me twice in the past two years. He has gone the distance to protect my business against a groundless law suit as well as he has proven to be a strong advocate of my personal well being in a consumer arbitration case. Reed has never failed to ask my for my input and has always returned my calls and emails in a timely, professional, and courteous manner. I could never have navigated the choppy waters of my past legal issues without his reliable expertise.
