DUI

Got my DUI reduced to a reckless driving which avoided pretty big consequences. I'm not sure about the anonymous person who said something about "getting credit" for DL suspension, that isn't how it works. You get credit for jail time, the DL suspension isn't even something the judge CAN "credit" ti...me for no matter who your lawyer is. I know this because it was my 3rd DUI charge! But keep listening to your jailhouse "lawyer" friends if you think that works for you. Mr. Powers took care of my case when things didn't look so good and he got me a better deal than I could have ever hoped for. He wanted to go to trial in my case, and it's possible I could have done even better, I just didn't want the risk when he ALSO got me a really good offer by pointing out how the officers had screwed up. Hopefully I'll never be in trouble again, but if I am, he'll be the first call I make.

D U I

Failed to negotiate a good plea deal but accepted the first one to come along and failed to get credit for 3 1/2 months loss of D L for a year suspension . Most lawyers get credit for their clients both for jail time and loss of D L. I should have listened to some people when I was told not to get a... lawyer from Ocala .{ because its the good old boy system}

A good lawyer should always use his professional skills and experience to the maximum benefit of his client. Since the client is the one to live with the consequences, it's up to the client to choose, and to own that choice once made. The lawyer doesn't accept a plea, the client does - or the client decides that he would prefer to go to trial. That is never a decision in which I interfere, other than to provide honest analysis of the strengths and weaknesses we face and discuss our best strategies. In this case, we filed a ten-page motion to suppress and argued in court for hours to get all evidence thrown out. Unfortunately, the judge just didn't see the defense version of events after watching the DUI video and hearing 2 officers' testimony. We then fought hard for the option of a minimum legal sentence from the prosecutor - and got it - but on a second DUI, 10 days in jail IS the minimum. As for DL suspension, it is mandatory and starts from the day of the sentence. There isn't such a thing as back "credit" to arrest date in a criminal DL suspension. (See http://floridadefenders.com/dui-florida/dui-penalties). Regardless, I recognize that DUI penalties in Florida are severe, especially for repeat offenders. That often leaves us the choice of negotiating the lowest possible sentence or demanding trial and taking the risk of a much heavier penalty. Whatever the client's tolerance for risk may be, that is always a decision for the client to make, and I respect that choice.

He saved my brother

My brother was accused of a terrible crime that could have ended in 10-25years in jail. Jeremy thouroughly explained everything To me from the beginning while my brother was in jail from the charges awaiting a bail hearing. He did everything he said. He asked articulate questions during the trial an...d killed the closing statement. Thank you so much!!!!

Thank you. In some cases, a false accusation can take on a life of its own, grow, and have terrifying consequences. What's worse, an accuser is often afraid to admit the truth once their story gets too far. It's important to test the credibility of every witness and understand their motives, so that the right questions can be asked, and the right arguments made to a judge and jury. Seeing someone get their life back after facing the worst is a feeling that never gets old.
