Mindi Beth Lasley

In July 2015, I was served a supplemental petition to modify final judgement by my ex-wife. This marked the third time she had served me since 2010. As one would expect, I have become pretty familiar with the family court system, so I had a good idea of the type of lawyer I wanted to retain. After... my consultation with Mindi, I was confident her goal was to serve my best interest. Mindi immediately started gathering facts and information and used this data to turn the tables with a counter petition of Affirmative Defense: Unclean Hands. This really stirred up my ex and her attorney. They began dragging their feet and sent a ridiculous number of emails to Mindi containing no real substance. Mindi did a fantastic job at handling these emails and calls without burning through my retainer. Additionally, one emailed response from Mindi to opposing counsel sealed the deal. Her response to accusations made against me were so cleverly crafted and precise that my ex-wife literally begged me to drop the case. That’s right, my ex-wife tried to modify the final judgement and then begged me to not “take the children away” from her. After some discussion with Mindi and my ex, we decided to settle out of court. Mindi and I were both confident we would win the case, but she was empathetic to my thoughts and I didn’t feel any pressure from her to continue the case. It’s also worth noting Mindi’s paralegal, Yanna, was fantastic as well. I had many conversations with Yanna and always felt that she was looking out for my best interest. If I ever need a family lawyer again I would hire Mindi without a second thought, however, I don’t think I will because my ex-wife knows this as well.

Mindi recently negotiated and finalized a prenuptial agreement for me, and we just had the wedding as planned without a moment of doubt or misconception. It was a huge help to me to have her represent my interests and provide guidance with such integral decisions as I begin this new chapter of my lif...e. She really stuck to our demands to insure this was not some one-sided winner take all sort of deal. We obtained a fair agreement due to her ability to be reasonable and poised when proposing our counter-offers. It eases the mind to know that you are protected no matter what the future may hold, and I’m certain I obtained only the best due to her services.

I found Mindi on this site, and believe I would be doing other AVVO users an injustice if I were to not recount my experience with this attorney. My experience with Mindi started around AUG of 2013. My divorce would not be finalized until APR of 2014. In my opinion; she continually pushed to tak...e the case to trial, was poorly prepared during the mediation, did a poor job of preparing me for what to expect throughout the process, and misrepresented the costs I would incur. During mediation, I felt like she hadn't taken any time to familiarize herself with the case. I was prepared to pay alimony and child-support. However, when the opposing party presented their "offer" in mediation they were so far from what Mindi had said I would be paying, that it was simply infuriating. I ended up agreeing to a lesser amount. After 6 hours of sitting in a closed room with Mindi, where I never felt like she was the least bit prepared, or doing anything more than pushing to take the case to trial, I was over the mediation. We had come to terms on everything. I asked the mediator (whom Mindi had selected), "Is there anything I need to sign before leaving?" She said no. I asked Mindi, "Is there anything I need to sign before leaving?" She also said no. I had the mediator run my credit card and I left. Months later, Mindi was continuing to bill me for a variety of matters, even though everything should have been finalized that day in mediation. She did send threatening emails saying that she wasn't going to take any more action until the retainer was replenished. At one point, when I was refusing to pay her more, she called me and assured me verbally that this would be the LAST time I would be asked for another retainer. She did not honor what she said and a few weeks later she was billing me again. When I confronted her about the bill, and reminded her what she told me on the phone, she told me the reason the case was dragging on was because I left the mediation too early. I left the mediation when she said I could leave, and when her hand selected mediator told me I could leave. Mindi blaming me for the case dragging out was unprofessional, dishonest, a mis-representation of the facts, and the bills that were generated post mediation -- in my opinion -- where unfair. When the divorce was finally being signed off on, the opposing counsel found some loopholes in Mindi's paperwork and encouraged my ex-wife to fight for more money. The county in which we had the case is firm believer (and has a track record to show) that both parents having an equal time share is in the best interest of the children. Mindi never mentioned this, all the while knowing that a fair time share was the most important thing to me. I thought that I wouldn't get more than every other weekend. My research afterwards, and the experiences of friends going through similar matters, indicated that I didn't get nearly as many overnights with my children as I deserved, or was entitled to. There are more discrepancies that I would share, but one of the most important messages I can relay is this; I am in a situation now where my ex-wife is wanting to move the children out of state. Obviously, this will require legal representation. I will not be working with Mindi on this, or any other future legal needs.

I was provided with copies of all documents as they came in, clear instructions on the proceedings, and prepared for all court dates. I recently finalized my divorce case and could not be more pleased with the work and effort made by Mindi and her staff.
