Richard A. Schurr, Esquire, has a highly specialized law practice with a focus on business and corporate litigation, transactional law, family law, estates and trusts, receivership and mediation. Mr. Schurr represents a wide range of individuals and businesses in a variety of industries, such as real estate, recycling, manufacturing, health care, retail, entertainment, and commercial collections. Mr. Schurr's unique legal, financial and business experience allow him to successfully represent clients in all aspects of business, taxation, and litigation.
Mr. Schurr launched his professional career as a Certified Financial Planner at PaineWebber, Inc., in Orlando, Florida, and eventually Santa Ana, California, from 1987 to 1990. While at PaineWebber, Mr. Schurr used his NASD Series 7 and Series 63 securities licenses to counsel a variety of business owners, including Burger King franchisees and executives, and professionals. Mr. Schurr was also a financial planner with Sentra Securities, Inc., and Barth Financial Services, Inc.. During this time, Mr. Schurr held a California Life and Disability Insurance License. He continues to practice financial planning for a few select clients.
Mr. Schurr graduated from California State University's undergraduate program with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, with a concentration in personal financial planning. Mr. Schurr then attended Whittier Law School, where he was a member of The Whittier Law Review and the Whittier Honor Board. His law review article, titled Burson v. Freeman: Where the Right to Vote Intersects with The Freedom to Speak is published in the Whittier Law Review, Vol. 1, No 3., 1994. Mr. Schurr graduated from the University of Miami School of Law's masters program in taxation in 1995.
In 1995, Mr. Schurr's receivership experience began with him serving as a consultant for receiverships and working with commercial litigators in the liquidation of Southeast Bank, N.A. a major South Florida Banking institution; the liquidation of Capital Factors, Inc., a significant Palm Beach County factoring company; the liquidation of Unique Gems International, a $40 million dollar ponzi scheme; as well as taking over sole responsibility for managing the forensic accounting work as to a $10 million dollar commercial litigation in the rendering and vegetable shortening industries Mr. Schurr's practice has evolved over the years into all aspects of receivership, including representing receivers and serving as a court appointed Receiver.
Mr. Schurr started his law firm, Richard A. Schurr, P.A., in 1997, and he co-founded Forensic Accounting & Litigation Services, LLC, located in Hollywood, Florida, in 2004. Mr. Schurr's legal, financial and forensic work experience has qualified him to represent several receivers in the operation and sale of various businesses, such as Baja Beach Club, a real estate property management company, as well as several restaurants, a property maintenance company, and a sign manufacturer. Mr. Schurr has also been court appointed as a Receiver to oversee the liquidation of a boiler sales and repair company in Miami Lakes, Florida, as well as a condominium association in Palm Beach County.
From 1997 through 2006, Mr. Schurr worked as outside General Counsel for The Theobald Industries Inc, a food packaging and recycling business operating in New York, New Jersey, Louisiana, and Florida. Mr. Schurr was responsible for the coordination of 19 litigation matters in four states, selecting and providing direction to outside counsel and forensic accountants, and overseeing and managing the multi-state litigations and business interests of the client.
Mr. Schurr is a member of the United States Tax Court and he has represented numerous clients before the Internal Revenue Service in connection with income tax and trust fund tax matters.
Mr. Schurr was notably interviewed by Fortune Small Business (FSB) Magazine after he participated in an arbitration of one of the earliest cyber-squatting cases, pursuant to the then newly created Internet Arbitration procedures established by ICANN.
