Harold George Uhrig

    I was a police officer before I was a lawyer. I was a the Gainesvile Police Department. I was there for over 6 years. I was also the first Legal Advisor for that department. After that I practiced criminal defense for a year before taking the position as General Counsel and Legal Advisor to the Orange County Sheriff's Department. For 4 years i was also the Police Legal Advisor to 10 Orange County municipal police department. While with Orange County I was elected President of the Florida Association of Police Attorneys. I also atended the FBI National Academy in Quantico Virginia.

    On leaving the Sheriff's Department I was appointed Assistant Attorney General for the State of Florida in Talahassee. I later returned to the Orlando area and spent three years as a Division Chief and trial lawyer at the Public Defender's Office. There I handled thousands of cases and did over 100 trials, from DUI to murder.

    I left the PD Office in 1984 and co-foubnded the law firm of Butcher, Benetiz & Uhrig, doing criminal defense. In the years that followed i was associated with two other criminal defense law firms before founding The Defense Group. While with the firm of Cotter, Uhrig & Valerino, I was privileged to handle the first four DNA evidence trials in US history and appeared on The Today Show to discuss the case.

    I've taught in several regional police academies. I've taught constitutional and criminal law at Columbia College and in the Rollins Masters level Criminal Justice Programs.

    I spent two years as a legal analyst for FOX 35 News in the Ornaldo area. Following involvement in some high profile cases, I had the opportunity to appear on many major YV news shows in New York including Oprah, Sean Hannity, Charlie Rose, Scott Pelly, Ashleigh Benefield, Anderson Cooper, Piers Morgan and others.

   I'm married to the same girl I fell in love wih as a teenage (50 years ago). We have four adult children (an accountant, an attorney, a bankruptcy management executive and a business owner) and 10 grandchildren.

    We currentky staff ofices in Maitland and Tavares, Florida, and represent clients throughout Central Florida.

  I golf, boat & read. My appetite is liberal and my politics are conservative.

    I've cut my practice to "half time"-- about 12 hours a day.
