Overpriced Consultation – Felt Like Sales, Not Law Advice

Scheduled a consultation with Attorney Charles Vega after a Florida Bar referral. The assistant immediately warned of a $5,000 firm retainer, then emailed more "instructions" bumping it to $5k–$7k minimum. During the call, Vega was 5 minutes late (despite claiming "extremely prompt" and threatening ...to dismiss cases). As I tried to explain my elderly parents FDUTPA deceptive practices case (bait-and-switch HVAC install leading to mold/dust harm), he cut me off repeatedly with "Don't mean to sound rude, BUT..." and insisted the case was "extremely complicated." He pivoted straight to mold exposure, demanding a $2,000+ mold expert test + doctor testimony linking my elderly parents' breathing issues directly to it—ignoring the root deception (false premium ducts, hidden invoices, warranty dodges). He mentioned a 4-year statute of limitations but added "for $10,000 minimum retainer, at $425 an hour, and more expert witnesses, we might have something." Worse: he insisted on a 30-minute phone consult only—no in-person meeting. For $10k upfront, I need to see body language and look you in the eyeball not just hear excuses. And when I asked about attorney fees under FDUTPA, he flat-out said "you can't go after them at all"—which is wrong; the statute allows the prevailing party to seek "reasonable" attorney fees. This felt like classic price conditioning—downplay the case, inflate complexity, push big costs. No interest in FDUTPA's fee-shifting or contingency. I walked away. If you're dealing with consumer fraud, look elsewhere—someone who listens first, not sells.

Let's be clear. You are not a client. We provided a complimentary consultation where we spent significant time addressing your numerous questions and providing a detailed, honest assessment of this complex case. We pride ourselves on being direct with potential clients, even when the reality of a legal situation isn't what they hope to hear. Our retainer fees are discussed during the initial call and are clearly outlined in the written confirmation email you received. Here is the best, you asked us if you should move forward? We told told you not to without substantially documented medical evidence. So we told you not to hire us and not spend your parents money on this case. In summary, you asked an attorney who gave their opinion for free and you did not like the answer and you thanked us by giving us a one star review.

Repeat customer

I highly recommend The Law Firm of Charles Vega. Repeat customer. Mr Vega was very caring and thorough in handling my trust. He explained the step-by-step process to me and always returned my phone calls promptly. I also retained Gretchen for a family matter and Minerva for another matter. His sta...ff there have always been attentive and professional in unusual, complicated situations.
