Poor Communication and Professionalism

I would not recommend working with McLaw’s Law Group. My experience was marred by several communication breakdowns and a lack of professionalism from both Rebecca and her paralegal, Rosalyn. Divorce is challenging, and while there are no winners, a competent attorney can help their client feel more c...onfident and secure throughout the process. To be fair, I will outline both the positives and negatives of my experience with Rebecca. Initially, Rebecca was very responsive. I did not have the funds to retain her immediately, so she kindly gave me a week to gather the money from selling my house. However, I asked Rebecca to escrow the funds from the sale into her account, but she deferred to my ex’s legal team to manage the escrow. This has since become a nightmare, making it difficult to retrieve my money. Once the case settled, I could not pick up the check from my ex’s legal team; it was sent via FedEx to Rebecca’s office, which failed to deliver it, causing further delays. Rebecca went on leave due to a death in her family without notifying me. After several unanswered emails and calls, her paralegal, Rosalyn, eventually informed me that Rebecca was out of the office. When I confronted Rebecca about the lack of communication, she blamed me for over-communicating, saying there were no updates to provide. However, I wasn't just seeking updates; I needed a timeline and next steps, which they failed to provide. During this time, I lost my car and had to rent one to meet Rebecca. After traveling an hour and fifteen minutes, I called to inform her I was running five minutes late, only to learn she wasn't in the office and had been called into emergency court the day before. Although she apologized, this incident was just one of many demonstrating their lack of professionalism and communication. This was my first divorce, and I had many questions. Given my financial situation, having a clear timeline and next steps was crucial to plan my life. I ended up losing almost everything in the divorce. Additionally, my mother and brother fell ill, prompting me to push for a settlement instead of waiting two more months for the court date. Unfortunately, the settlement process took longer than going to court would have, partly due to my ex’s lawyer, Jackie Piland, taking a week to review a document. Throughout the process, it seemed that either my legal team or my ex’s was not being truthful about the status and next steps. I expressed my diminishing confidence in Rebecca to her, and instead of reassuring me, she stated she did not want to represent a client who lacked confidence in her abilities and refused to return the retainer. If a paying client expresses doubt, the professional response would be to reassure them, not threaten to terminate the contract. Lastly, I am still facing issues retrieving the settled funds and have yet to receive a response to my emails or phone calls. Given these experiences, I cannot recommend working with Rebecca.

I can’t put into words… but let me try.

I was in desperate need of an attorney who would take my case. Due to my lying family and my ex I was fighting hard for custody of my kids and to divorce my ex. Due to covid and the shut downs and the court it did take a long time but Rebecca worked really hard and is a “bull dog” attorney. She helpe...d me get my girls home safe and sound and away from my toxic family and my abusive and negligent ex. On the flip side of this coin, after having a conversation with her after court she said I would not have to pay attorneys fees as I was awarded them by the court and that my ex would have to pay her. I was so excited and grateful as I had taken out two loans and lost a car fighting for my kids and paying her. I also reapeatedly requested the itemized bill which I would constantly be told I would receive and wouldn’t ever get. I paid her a lot and after looking at the bills was not only double charged for things but hours had been adjusted to charge me almost double for something I had already paid for. She was also very unprofessional when she spoke to me on several occasions for trying to check in on my case after not hearing anything for weeks on end. And to top it all off, she is now suing me for the money that is left owed for the remaining balance even though she verbally told me I was not gonna have to pay and the order specifically named that the money is owed by him. She is great in court but unethical.

Avvo allows individuals to make posts anonymously and without any independent verification of the information provided. In this case, the poster is Ashley Williams. Ms. Williams case was pending in the Superior Court of Cobb County, Georgia. Ms. Williams' divorce is a matter of public record. If you wish to review information about the work we performed, it is online and available. Ms. Williams' statements are not true and inaccurate. Ms. Williams lost custody of her children prior to my representation of her through a temporary order based on her ex-husband's allegations of mental illness on her part. We overcame those allegations and the Guardian ad Litems' recommendation of custody to her ex-husband. Ms. Williams was extremely happy with our services and left a 5 star review. Ms. Williams changed her review after she was asked to pay for the services that were rendered. We believe in transparency and always invite our clients to discuss any concerns they have about the services provided and the itemized bill. Ms. Williams was provided an itemized bill. Ms. Williams was invited to address any concerns about it in writing to us. Ms. Williams' post is the first time we learned that she had concerns, as she never responded to our email or provided anything in writing to us. We understand that times are tough for everyone. Ms. Williams' final hearing was several days. We did not bill her for all the work that we actually performed. The trial court also required us to prepare the final documents, which caused her to incur more expenses. As a result, we offered to allow Ms. Williams to make monthly payments on the outstanding balance. We asked her to give us the amount she felt she could pay rather than insisting on a large amount that she could not potentially meet. Ms. Williams agreed to pay us a monthly amount. When the first payment came due, Ms. Williams then refused to pay. We notified her that we would have no choice but to begin collection efforts and that it was not something we wanted to do. Ms. Williams was informed that we preferred to try to work it out with her. Ms. Williams' response was to "sue her." We do not usually sue clients, as most of the time we are able to resolve any issues. Unfortunately, Ms. Williams refused any of our efforts to resolve the outstanding debt leaving us no choice. In response, she changed her positive review from 5 star to 1 star. We remain willing to resolve the situation with Ms. Williams and wish her the very best.

Unsatisfied

I hired Rebecca to do my divorce and as we would meet, i started second guessing my decision to hire her. She was very hard to get a hold of. They NEVER answer the phone. They very rarely answer the emails. After the divorce was final, they didn't include my name change and I tried for 6 months to ge...t her to take care of this for me and to this day, my name is still the same as it was when I was married. The courts told me that I would have to pay an additional $300 for the name change after I paid her $2,000 for the divorce! I just wish I would have researched her before I hired her because if I did, I would have NEVER hire her. I even told her that I was going to write a bad review on her and she wouldn't even respond to me! PLEASE think twice before you hire her.

The work performed on Sonya's behalf was excellent. Sonya originally came to the firm as a referral. She had very limited funds and asked that our firm keep her bill as low as possible. When we communciate or do work on a client's file, the client is charged. This was made known to Sonya at the outset of our representation of her. We kept our word to Sonya and kept her bill very low. We did notify her when her case was filed. We also communciated by email and telephone. We updated Sonya that we were working on scheduling mediation. We updated Sonya on the mediation date. We prepared for mediation. We have detailed billing records of all the times we worked on her file, communciated with her, and updated her on the status of her case. We prepared for trial after the case did not settle. We had trial exhibits ready and, after trial, Sonya, in front of her children, expressed how pleased she was with how we represented her. Unfortuantely, the Court prepared its own Order. The Court failed to include the name change despite our request for the change. Sonya talked to a clerk that is not a lawyer and got wrong information. Rebecca explained to Sonya that she did not have to seek a name change because of the mistake by the Court, as the law allowed the Court to enter an Amended Order to change her name. At no cost to Sonya, our office prepared an amended Order that was hand delivered to the Court. When the Order was not entered, Rebecca went to the Judge's office on two different occassions and asked about the Order. On the second occassion, Rebecca spoke directly with the Judge's staff attorney and presented another copy of the Order. Rebecca did not cause the issue with the name change but worked without payment from Sonya to resolve the issue. In fact, Rebecca never asked Sonya to pay money to fix the problem that was caused the Court when it drafted the Final Order even though she was within her right to do so pursuant to the Attorney Retainer Agreement. Sonya was made aware of Rebecca's efforts to try to get the Amended Order entered because Rebecca communicated that to her. For Sonya to now write a misleading and incorrect review is unfortuante. This is particularly true given Rebecca's effort to try to resolve the problem for Sonya without any payment from her. In this case, the old adage is true, "good deeds never go unpunished."

"I have known Rebecca for nearly 15 years now. I first met her when she was a paralegal at a established law firm in Marietta. I quickly learned that her knowledge of family law actually exceeded that of many of the actual attorneys in the firm. I suspect she knew this to be true as well, which is why she heard her calling to go to law school and earn her law degree. Althought she only recently earned her law degree, Rebecca has been an outstanding attorney for over 15 years. Her knowledge of the law and integrity is extraordinary and I am proud to have her as a fellow member of this profession."
