also known as Elizabeth, Franklin-Best
I am a nationally recognized federal criminal defense and appellate attorney with over 20 years of experience fighting for clients in high-stakes post-conviction matters. Since founding my boutique firm, Elizabeth Franklin-Best, P.C., in 2019, I have dedicated my practice exclusively to federal criminal appeals and post-conviction relief, representing clients nationwide before various U.S. Circuit Courts of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court.
My Approach to Federal Criminal Defense
My firm operates on a simple yet powerful principle: no stone is left unturned. By maintaining an intentionally small caseload, I provide each client with personalized attention and a custom-tailored legal strategy from initial consultation through final resolution. Whether you’re seeking compassionate release, challenging a wrongful conviction through a § 2255 motion, or pursuing early termination of supervised release, you will receive my direct involvement and relentless advocacy.
Experience That Makes a Difference
After earning my J.D. and M.A. in Philosophy from the University of Wyoming, I began my career at the Richland County Public Defender’s Office. I later served at the South Carolina Commission on Indigent Defense, Appellate Division, where I handled death penalty direct appeals and serious felony cases. As a partner at Blume, Franklin-Best & Young, LLC from 2012 to 2019, I focused on capital post-conviction and federal habeas proceedings.
The South Carolina Public Defender Association honored me as the 2010 “Public Defender of the Year” for excellence in appellate advocacy. I have also served as Chair of the Board of Directors for Justice 360, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting equity in capital cases.
National Practice, Local Commitment
I am admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, all U.S. Circuit Courts of Appeals, and numerous federal district courts across the country. My active involvement in professional organizations—including serving as Co-Chair of the NACDL Amicus Curiae Committee for the Fourth Circuit and Co-Leader of the South Carolina Chapter of the Women’s White Collar Defense Association—keeps me at the forefront of developments in federal criminal law.
I am the author of Reversing Your Criminal Conviction: Develop Your Winning Strategy (2023) and regularly speak at legal conferences on appellate brief writing, post-conviction procedures, and white-collar criminal defense strategies.

We sincerely appreciate your kind words and are grateful we could support you during your transition from federal incarceration to supervised release. I am a model and grad student at NYU. A few years ago I got mixed up with the wrong people and ended up in a federal holding cell. That's when I called Elizabeth Franklin-Best. Not only was I released, but I was able to get my life back. I wouldn't be where I am today without Elizabeth's help.
Thank you for sharing your experience. We’re proud to have played a role during such a difficult time in your life, and it’s incredibly rewarding to hear that you’ve gone on to pursue your education and career. Your determination to move forward is a testament to your own resilience. We wish you continued success at NYU and beyond.

I hired Elizabeth Franklin-Best P.C. while incarcerated to help with two major issues: my legal name change and securing a full year in a halfway house for reentry. Both were denied initially. Elizabeth filed motions for reconsideration, stayed on top of the process, and ultimately got both requests ...
Thank you for this thoughtful review. Reentry planning—including halfway house placement and addressing legal matters like name changes—can be an uphill battle, especially when initial requests are denied. We’re glad we could help navigate those obstacles and that the persistence paid off. More importantly, we appreciate your noting how you were treated throughout the process. Respectful communication with our clients isn’t just a policy—it’s foundational to how we practice. We wish you all the best as you move forward.

Elizabeth Franklin Best is an outstanding attorney. Betsy more than lived up to her qualifications and reputation! I knew from the initial phone call that she was the one. She was honest and direct. She did not over-promise or confuse us. She listened and explained the options. She developed a...
Vickie, thank you for your kind words. Your uncle’s case was both challenging and deeply meaningful. Securing his release after 19 years on a 480-month sentence required significant effort, and we were honored to be part of that fight. We are profoundly sorry for his passing so close to his release date—there are no words adequate for that loss. Please know that your family remains in our thoughts, and we’re grateful you trusted us with something so important.

My son was sentenced 50 years in SCDC at 19 years old and devastated the whole family, because he never should have been sentenced that harshly. Mrs. Best came to prison and spoke to him and gave him hope and life to fight for an appeal! All he remembers as we continue to fight is Mrs. Elizabeth Fran...
Thank you for sharing your family’s story. A 50-year sentence imposed on a 19-year-old is life-altering for everyone involved, and we understand the weight your family carries. We’re honored that our meeting with your son provided some measure of hope during an incredibly difficult time. The fight for justice can be long, but having a family as supportive as yours makes all the difference. We’ll continue to be here as you move forward, and we’re grateful for your trust in our firm.
