Not an Effective Lawyer

I retained Attorney Taylor George McCallman of Beaver Courie Attorneys at Law in July 2024 to represent me in a serious criminal matter in Hoke County, North Carolina. This review reflects only my personal experience as his client. During nearly two years of representation, I became increasingl...y concerned about communication, preparation, and the handling of important pretrial issues in my case. I repeatedly provided information concerning potential defenses and significant legal questions involving the out-of-state convictions the State intended to rely upon. I also communicated concerns regarding discovery, suppression, dismissal, and other matters that I believed required pretrial attention. Despite these concerns, I did not see the substantive pretrial motions or litigation that I expected in a case carrying potentially serious consequences. My dissatisfaction is not based on the outcome of my case. I understand that no attorney can guarantee a particular result. My concerns involve the level of communication, preparation, investigation, and advocacy that I personally experienced after retaining private counsel. Eventually, Mr. McCallman was relieved as my attorney, and I began representing myself. After doing so, I personally prepared and filed motions addressing discovery, preservation of evidence, dismissal, the State’s alleged predicate conviction, and other issues that I believed needed to be placed before the court. I have also submitted my concerns regarding the representation to the North Carolina State Bar for its independent review. Other clients may have had different experiences with Mr. McCallman, and I respect that. I can only speak about my own experience. When someone hires private criminal-defense counsel for a serious felony case, I believe that client should receive meaningful communication, careful review of the evidence, investigation of potential defenses, and appropriate pretrial advocacy. Based upon my personal experience, I was not satisfied with the representation I received. —Dr Lamar Bernard Burno Sr.

Avvo Rating

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
