Joy was great at catching and explaining things that my ex’s lawyer attempted to sneak in the settlement agreement. She, or her staff, kept me updated regularly on updates and changes in the process, I highly recommend her.
Joy worked very hard on my case even on weekend hours to make sure that I was afforded the opportunity to see my daughter. She had a tremendous fight against her considering what she was up against but she came through and I couldn't be happier with the results.
Joy grew up in Lincolnton, North Carolina and moved to Gaston County in 2001, where she currently resides. She began her legal career as a paralegal for 13 years before becoming a lawyer in 2009. Her 23 years of experience in the legal field has served her well in that she has a compassionate client-centered approach to helping individuals and families obtain the best possible outcomes with their family law issues.
Joy graduated with her Master’s in Business Administration degree in 2003 and obtained her Juris Doctor degree in 2009. During law school, Joy had interned with the Gaston County Public Defenders’ office and for the Honorable Carl Horn, III in the Federal Court in the Western District of North Carolina.
Joy is licensed to practice law in North Carolina and the Federal Court in the Western District of North Carolina. She is a member of the Gaston County Bar, the North Carolina State Bar, and the Family Law Section of the North Carolina Bar Association.
Joy is a volunteer attorney with the Gaston County Domestic Violence Legal Clinic through the Gaston County Sheriff’s Department and has also handled numerous pro bono cases with Legal Aid of Gastonia in family law related matters.
In her free time, Joy loves spending time with her son, hiking, traveling and attending fitness classes.

Joy helped me and my wife gain custody of two young girls who came from an abusive household. As a 3rd party, this was a daunting task, but Joy stuck with it for months and we won custody of the girls at trial. I could not recommend Joy enough, both as a lawyer and a human being.

Excellent in the field of family practice
I was recommended to Ms. Chappell to handle my separation/divorce, property settlement and child custody issues. Due to some disagreements during my separation, she advised me of some options I would not have known I had, ones that benefited me in the long run. She walked me through everything from separation to property separation tactics to the final divorce. I always felt confident in the courtroom and at scheduled appointments because I truly felt she was looking for things that suited my best interest. I would highly recommend her to anyone I know.
