also known as Tom Ashton
I was born and raised in Virginia. I attended college and law school in Virginia, and have enjoyed building a legal career and practicing law in courts across the state, from Roanoke to Virginia Beach, and from Richmond to Fairfax to Winchester.
I enjoy nearly every facet of the law, but I have a particular focus on the ethics of the practice of law, as well as the complexities of Virginia civil procedure. Having had the opportunity while I was in law school to study and to work with W. Hamilton Bryson, author of the definitive treatise on Virginia Civil Procedure and truly one of the kindest and most intelligent men I have ever met, I gained an appreciation for the framework of our procedural rules.
I am fascinated not only by the rules themselves, but by the history behind the rules. Virginia's legal community always keeps an eye on its rich legal tradition and its prominence in shaping American legal history. From the strict rules governing some of the first British settlements on our continent, to the pivotal role of Virginia's legal elite in the founding of our nation, to the evolution of the law in Virginia to meet the challenges of the new millennium, our Commonwealth has inspired, and been inspired by, attorneys. I am proud to be a part of that long and storied tradition.
