Posted by Cynthia | November 13, 2019 | Hired Attorney | Child Custody

Completely blindsided

I hired Mr. Kunberger to represent me in a basic custody and unpaid child support case. It was a pretty much a slam dunk case in everyone’s opinion. Especially Mr. Kunberger’s! Mr. Kunberger spent about 45 minutes on a phone call with me and then another 2 hours meeting with me face to face in his of...fice, before I decided to hire him. He appeared to be very knowledgeable in family law. I trusted that he would get a good outcome for my daughter and me. I was told that this case would take about 10 hours and paid the $2500 retainer fee and waited for court. We met about an hour before court and discussed our plan, he was reading a report that I had emailed at least 3 weeks prior, that was a bit concerning. To be honest, everything fell apart in court. Mr. Kunberger was completely out-litigated by a court appointed attorney and was absolutely nowhere near prepared. It was an absolutely embarrassing experience that I would not wish on anyone; I felt completely foolish and attacked by the judge, the guardian ad litem, and everyone else in the courtroom. Needless to say, we completely lost our case. (Full custody & $40k in back child support) I was told that he would need another $1500/minimum to appeal the case. I am a fairly smart and professional person who has never hired an attorney, I only hired one this time because I wanted to be absolutely sure that there would be no wiggling out of this, this time. $2500 down the drain and on to represent myself in a Circuit Court Appeal. Mr. Kunberger is a very nice man that I trusted and he completely failed me.

I'm sorry you feel this way. As we discussed, the Judge's decision was unprecedented in my experience. You can't prepare for a Judge to decide in ways that are, in my opinion, not in conformance with the law at least with respect to the child support issue. I hope you are successful in prosecuting your appeal.
